Is there any advantage to Alternator Field Disconnect AFD on a battery selector switch on my Tracker / Mercury 1996 40 hp ELPTO 4cyl. ouboard ? Dose it have coils that need to discharge to protect dioeds ? I think it just has a stator type charging system that will not benifit from AFD. I do no plan on moving he swich with the engine running, but... ya never know.

It's a permanent magent alternator. Doesn't have a field. The alternater field disconnect compensates for a failed blocking diode or mechanical regulator contact in an alternator system. (keeps the defective part from discharging your battery while you're sleeping at anchor) You have none of that.

I can't imagine what the field terminal on the switch would be hooked up to.

hope it helps

Re: Alternator Field Disconnect AFD - Outboard

Is there any need for AFD with ANY outboard??? I have an '84 Johnson 115.. getting ready to run wiring... going to use a selector switch, but I'm not sure if AFD would do anything for me...

Any input?

Thanks,

Tom
