Sort of. It has a stator under the flywheel that produces AC current. This is fed to a rectifier to convert it to DC voltage for charging. Usually when a motor stops charging its the rectifier and or regulator.

Group numbers (24, 27, etc) refer to the physical size of the battery. CCA (cold cranking amps) and MCA (marine cranking amps) are the "capacity of the battery. You can get either a group 24 or 27 with the same CCA/MCA in many cases. Generally though, the larger the battery, the higher capacity is possible. 550, 850, and 1150 CCA are small to large capacity batteries respectively. Get the highest capacity battery you have room for. you cannot have too much power -- just too little.

it takes a lot to turn those 6 cylinder motors 300 rpms, which they need to start.

Tiger, I have seen a picture of the belt driven alternator on some of the V6 Merc Outboards, in my service manual. If you are having trouble with it, you might take it to an automotive parts dealer and see if they can match it up. the match needs to be exact, since you will want one that fits perfectly and is marine rated.
