I have a volvo AQ131D 4 cyl engine. I had issues before with timing and got that corrected. My new problem started about 3 boat trips ago. I went out and noticed that the volt meter only read about 10 amps, it never went up when driving. Boat started every time as well, so I assumed no issues other than my volt meter was probably failed. Same happend on the next two trips, volt meter never dropped below 10 amps nor did it rise. Monday I went out and got gas at the waterway station, turned the boat off and then back on after fueling. This is when I noticed the volt meter was at about 2-3 amps. I ran the boat figuring that it started fine and cruised with no issues. Went fishing for about 3 hours until dark. when I turned on the lights, there were no signs of any problems. Once I throttled up to return, the boat did not want to go, I thought I had a problem with the gas or carb. The motor sounded as though it wanted to stall so I throttled to just above idle and took the 10 minute trip back (took an hour) to the channel, in the channel with moving currents, the boat wanted to stall again, so I backed down a little more and got to the dock. At the dock, I put the boat in neutral and gunned the gas, it reved up as it should. I shut the boat off and tried to restart, it didn't, the battery was dead. (deep cycle battery). I removed the alternator and took it back to the rebuild shop that did the rebuild. They told me the regulator was dead and rebuilt again. I also charged the battery fully and will be installing it and the alterntor today to try and head back out. The question is, would the faulty alternator cause the boat to not throttle properly? Or am I looking at another problem altogether.
