Alternator Question

I'm going to replace an alternator on a 1988 merc 4.3 175hp alpha one. It came with the mando 55 amp alternator. When I look up that alternator it also lists a 65 amp mando for that same year and engine. I would prefer the 65 amp alternator but I dont want to change alternator brackets/mounts.
Will the 65 amp bolt up where the 55 amp was?
On the pics they look the same but, I cant find any measurements to verify it.
Thanks.

Re: Alternator Question

If it lists it for your engine, then it's designed to fit. Usually the difference between the 55 and 65 Mando's were all internal, outside dimensions are the same.

Re: Alternator Question

I assumed I could use it but I didn't know if Merc used different brackets for different alternators. I found one locally so I will just take my old one to compare them. I thought I was going to order it and I wanted to make sure it worked before I purchased.
I appreciate your help Don S.

Re: Alternator Question

I'm updating in case anybody stumbles on this thread when searching a similar issue.
As Don pointed out the 55 amp and 65 amp alternators are compatible with each other. The case and voltage regulator on the 65 amp alternator are smaller than the 55 amp. Naturally its a little bit lighter as well. The mounting holes and wires are identical on both so its a direct swap.
I bought mine from a guy that bought an alternator without having his old one tested. He ended up not needing the new alternator after he had his engine/alternator properly diagnosed. I bought it in the box new for $50. They sell this alternator brand new for about $90 at DB Electrical in Eastern Tennessee. I thought that was a great price for a marine alternator and thought I should share it here.
Thanks again for your help Don.

Re: Alternator Question

That is a decent price. Is it a Chinese copy of the Korean Mando which is Japanese Hitachi? 'nutcase

Re: Alternator Question

Its not a Hitachi. I cant find on the box or alternator where it was made. I'm pretty sure its Chinese though.

Re: Alternator Question

I bought one of these from DB Electrical. I beleive it's made in Mando, Korea. Alternator was an exact copy of the one that came off my '92 305 Alpha One... works real well, installation was a breeze.

Re: Alternator Question

The paint bothered me a bit too. Merc paints all their stuff black so the grey alternator sticks out bad. I sold the boat yesterday and the buyer thought it was great he was getting a new alt in the deal. It worked out well for me. I also told the new owner about iboats. So yall be nice to new guy with a new to him 1989 Celebrity 180V (if he joins lol).
I just noticed that DB lists their alternators on eBay for $84 plus $12 shipping. Its a good deal imo.
