Alternator upgrade

I will be repowering my 1990 sundancer this next spring. I will be replacing the ole tired out 7.4 motor/ bravo 1 drive with a mildly built 454 bored out with s bravo 3 drive. While doing this I would like to shine it up by replacing the stock alternator with s chrone one. On the back of the current one is something the connects with 4 screws and looks like a condenser. Can someone explain to me what this thing is?

It's always good to post a pic when asking about something your seeing. You should have a Mando alternator and the regulator is mounted on the back

Yep, just cost more money. Here is a 120 amp alt which has the three wire standard connection. What they did is place a different cover over the regulator and bring the wires out the plug on the top instead of the two standard terminals.

You can actually take a delco one wire and convert it to three wire with a replacement plug, have one sitting on the shelf decided not to use

I used krylon on my alternator. its now black.

when I updated to billet valve covers and oil pan, I am sending them out to be hard-kote anodized black.

I hate chrome, and I dont like to polish aluminum anymore.

Ayuh,.... 'ell, I just paint everything with Rustoleum,....
Though the 4.3l in the fishin' barge was implement paint of a different brand,... ole Cat Yellow,...
P/S pump, 'n alt. are block colors, manifolds are Rustoleum hammer finish Silver, were ole Cat Yellow,......
Did add polished ssteel risers,...

Latest project is Rustoleum hammer finish Gold,....

I/O alternators are the same as auto except for the spark protection in them. You can find them in all flavors.

Not sure what the fascination is with a chrome alternator id. As my Harley buddies would say, "chrome don't get you home."

I understand that but there's nothing wrong with having a nice "looking" motor along with a good running one.
