Alternator wiring?

Hey guys, I was hoping you could help me with something.

I am trying to finish up my basket case 1998 Seaswirl with the carbureted 3.0 Volvo Penta and I have run into a wiring issue. In my haste to pull the old engine while working outside, in the dark, and before it started raining I did not write down where the alternator wires attach to. I am working with the 1998 Volvo Penta service manual that shows the wiring diagram, but it appears to be a bit different than what I have, and I was hoping somebody could shed some light on this.

Out of the wiring harness (first picture) I have four wires. (red, orange, purple/white, and what looks like a light purple) The book shows (second picture) an (orange, purple/white, purple, and black) and black being a color I don?t have. I have checked other threads and googled it, I get links that show a 3 wire harness or a black ground wire.

My guess is that
Red - I would have thought that this would go to the battery but not sure, diagram does not show it.
Orange - goes to the battery connection marked (B) on the alternator
purple/white - goes to the choke marked (P) on the alternator
light purple - goes to the coil (EXC) on the alternator

Any thoughts or ideas? I?m just trying to avoid burning something up

Re: Alternator wiring?

Hard to say what you have going there. Looks like you have the black wire in the wrong place (if hooked up at all) even looks like under the boot it turns purple.
As far as the red wire ?????? Is it red or purple, can't tell. Where does it go to on the other end.
Then you have the small almost white wire on the lower left of your alt picture. What color is it really, and where does it go on the other end.
Do you have an isolater installed or something like that?

Re: Alternator wiring?

From right to left the first wire is a red one, the second wire is an orange one, the wire that comes in between the red and orange is actually purple with a white stripe. It is incased in a black cover into the boot, and the wire that looks white is what appears to be a very light purple color. I attached them by what the manual shows and then discovered that it didn't show a red wire. Doh!!! I was hoping somebody had run accross this problem before.

I am not sure where the other ends attach to, I will investigate it over the weekend and report back.

Did you ever figure out what the red wire connects to on the alternator?
