Just bought a 1987 3.0 Alpha one, project boat. Motor & outdrive do run, but I am waiting for warmer weather to de-winterize. I do not know if the alternator works, yet, but was told it does work. I am updating wiring, and you can see from the pic that the previous owner was apparently a residential electrician. I noticed the purple wire to the alternator is blind ending (resistance wire to the coil?). There is a black (ground?) wire exiting the alternator which is also blind ending. Where should the purple wire connect? View attachment 132340View attachment 132341View attachment 132342View attachment 132343View attachment 132344

Re: Alternator wiring

Looks like the old Mando alternator used on that engine. There should be 3 wires coming out of the regulator on the back.
Here is the manual for your engine, download it and look at section 4C.

I would suggest you take the alternator off, and take it to your local alternator/starter/elect motor repair shop in your area and get it tested and confirm that it works.

Re: Alternator wiring

Oh yeah, 1000 thanx for the service manual link. Beats heck out of the operation & maintenance manual supplied by previous owner. I'm just gonna do a voltage test on the battery w/rev of engine to ck alternator. I just wanted to make sure loose wires hanging were normal, with a likely retrofit alternator. Seems they are. Lightning fried the "up" trim solenoid and trim switch. Fixed for $32. Cosmetics now, tearing out carpet, wax & buff, refinish wood trim. I'll post it all in pics in a few weeks. Summer wont come too soon. This forum is DYNAMITE!
