alum boat help

i just got an alum. tracker that has yr's of scum on the bottom :blue:

what will take it off???

do they make a good clearcoat to put back on it???

No clearcoat, but there's a product called Sharkhide that cleans, shines, and protects.

That sounds like it might be a tanic acid stain, is the water real brown where you boat... looks like coca-cola?

Here's another method cleaning/polishing aluminum:

... but if that aluminum is as badly stained as you say you may not be able to find anything to take it off completely.

have you tryed this stuff?? looks interesting


so far eazy off oven cleaner HD and a green scrub pad is doing a far job ( lots of elbow grease)

Yeah, that looks like a tanic acid stain to me. The cheapest and easiest would probably be some simple green and a scotchbrite pad... and lots of elbow grease.

sounds good i think for now i will stay with the oven cleaner and scotchbrite has been the best simple green was like putting water on it LOL

The best place to start is with an acid based pontoon boat cleaner, like ToonBrite--available at any boat dealership. Spray it on, hose it off. You might also have to go the ScotchBrite pad and a strong cleaner to finish the job.

Sharkhide is a thin, clear protectant to maintain a clean, polished finish. They also make an aluminum cleaner, but it's not easily found on retail stores' shelves.

It'll usually get the hull clean but leave a dull finish. If you don't like the finish, any unpainted aluminum boat can be polished for a better shine. I use a 6" wool bonnet on a Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher and White Diamond metal polish (Advance Auto Parts).

My pontoon boat is a near mirror finish.

I tryed toonbrite again this weekend and it just laugh at it :laugh:

maybe oven cleaner lol.try to put it in a natural man made lake for the summer and be ready to clean it little by little.

i did alittle this weekend and yes so far eazyoff and a scrub pad has done the best:joyous:

Are there any truck stops with a truck wash neer you?
Like a blue beakon...most truckers should know those by heart.
They have an acid that they spray on, a quik little scrub with a brush and rinse, but it leaves the aluminum white. Then you need a polish to shine and protect it.
I think they used to charge an extra $20 for the acid when I would get my truck washed.

A 5 gallon jug of that acid is over $100...
