Hey guys,

I'm thinking about looking at 1990/91 alumacraft cuddy cabin 22. I can't find out much about the boat thought. It looks like the exact same hull as a StarCraft islander of that era. Just instead of me power it has an omc 4.3l and an omc cobra out drive.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this boat? I've been told the deck and transom are solid.

Thanks!
Doug

OMC is a big red flag. Got pictures of the boat by chance?

Great boat, but the OMC, from what I've read and asked in the OMC section, the biggest problem with the Cobra is the shift system. If it is not maintained to perfection it will result in a $2200 upper drive gear replacement. It took OMC quite a few years to figure the problem out and then a whole lot of money on recalls and gear repairs. If it doesn't shift with one finger and like silk the shift system is out of adjustment.

it looks like it is a later model OMC which was more similar to the volvo outdrives. From what I can gather volvo and it are swappable?

the OMC outdrive is the concern is that correct? The OMC engine is just a Chev?

I've attached a couple pictures to give you an idea.

Nice looking boat! I didn't know that Alumacraft made that large of a boat. At least it would be new enough that someone makes a mercruiser outdrive conversion for the cobra model.

$5500

With the downriggers and some basic electronics.

Am I correct in thinking worst case I might in the future end up having to bolt on a volvo outdrive? And that it is possible? From what I have read it was a straight bolt on.

I've been told solid floors and solid transom. Anything else I should look out for? I think I'm going to take a look at it early next week.

It is really hard to see the outdrive in the photos, cuz of the snow storm, but it looks like it has a King Cobra!! If that is the case I believe it is replaceable with either a Volvo or Mercruiser. It's hard to tell in the photo but it looks different than the Cobra we brought home last weekend.

hmmm Interesting. I would be it is only 4.3L so I would be surprised if it was the king cobra. If that makes it easier to switch out... that would be great! lol The guy said it was a cobra, but didn't specify.

Def not a King Cobra, those only went behind 351 HO's and 460's. A friend had one and parts were getting hard to get as of last year. The OMC/Volvo mix didn't come until '95. My inlaws have a '95 FourWinns with an "OMC Cobra", but, it's actually a Volvo SX drive. Before '95 the Omc Cobras were Omc Cobras.....

ayeee not exactly what I want to hear. So doing a conversion would be just that... a conversion and probably a difficult task.

So the real problem is the outdrive then.

that's a nice boat but a lot of $. won't leave you much fixup $ unless you have a huge boat budget. when you're dropping this much $, you need to be SURE the floors and transom are solid. and i'd want to take it for a test drive for that $$.

Well I'm under the impression he will take $4500, I might even try to push the $4000 range. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow night and will report back. If it looks good I will push for a test drive.

I think at $4500 it isn't a bad deal if indeed the transom and floors are solid. Any one have any easy tests for the transom? Floors I can just bounce around on in search of soft spots. The engine starts right up, he has gone for a pontoon boat is why he wants to get rid of it.

The pictures really suck. So it really leaves it open to interpretation what kind of shape the boat is in. So I will take a bunch of pictures when I go see it.

crawl up under the stern and poke at transom in lowest portion you can reach; rot will usually begin either at bottom or under the transom corner caps.

Will do... I will reach down in as far as I can and poke around.

Thanks for the pointers.

Take a good LED flash light for looking in the dark corners. Plus turning the flash on, on a digital camera you can stick it under the motor and into tight places to get a look see, and capture what's there.

Is the 4000-4500 reasonable or do you think it is still high due to the OMC?
