I am curious, why not aluminum, salt or otherwise?

Ahh HBM you must be a sweetwater guy....

Cast iron heads + aluminum intake = 2 dissimilar metals + an electrolyte makes a battery. Pond water is 1 thing, but add that gatoraide electrolyte goodness that salt gives you and your in for lollaparotfest.

I went out to look at a boat last year... Typlical New England boat.... Old but low hours.
It was a 31 Sundancer, 454, raw water cooled of course.
Guy got the bright idea to put on some automotive high performance intake (me thinks it was an edelbrock) Customer stated that RPMS were low after the intake change, progessively got worse over time. Put 40 hours on the motor while it sat in Baaaastin Haaabor for 7 months before he hauled it out.
Self winterized... hehehe.
Went to start it in the spring and it was a no go. Hydrolocked. Rotted through intake, and the first time I saw this one... but completely rotted through head on the port rear. Engine was junk.

Re: aluminim intake on raw water cooled?

I run an aluminum intake on cast heads and have seen very little corrosion over the first couple of years. I run in salt on occassion, brackish fairly often and fresh water a lot. I do flush it with fresh water and when going in brackish usually put in upriver far enough that I run 5 or 10 miles in fresh on the way back. also, drain the engine when you're done and it stops the electrolysis while it's sitting in the drive. Note that the situation would be much different if it were sitting in the water. also, products like salt away do not help with galvanic corrosion. The best bet is to flush with a small amount of non-ionic dish detergent (ie dawn) and then drain. I should also note that my exhaust manifolds are aluminum as well. I do run small zinc anodes in the water jackets.

Finally, I understand there's not a lot of salt water in Kentucky.

Hey, I'm sitting in a hotel looking out the window at Baaaastin Haaaaaabor!

I am thinking about building another 454 (or 502) with aluminum manifolds (intake & exhaust), aluminum heads etc.

You get a fairly good reduction in weight on the back of the boat!

I also have closed cooling. I wouldn't do it any other way.....

Here's some examples of aluminum exhaust manifolds....

Achris said it BEST below!

2. the engine has a lot of Ali parts. If you're not running closed cooling you'll find them disappearing faster then you can replace them...

Well, I can see Pier 4 just to the "left" of the "World Trade Center Boston" and there's all sorts of flotsam and jetsom out there on the water!

I mean't more like dead hookers, washed up prophylactics, red tide, needles in the sand etc... that sort of stuff.

It's better now, but man you should have seen it in the 80's.
