I need to attach 4 ---6 to 10 ft strips of 1/4 inch 6061 aluminum to the hull of 5052 marine grade aluminum.

I want to use adhesive to accomplish this. Anyone have success in joining Aluminum to aluminum.

Currently leaning towards Lord 406-19 , Water proof with good sheer, compresion and peel strength. Any experiences with it ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Re: Aluminum adhesive

I am not familiar with your exact application but I have done alum to alum repairs with great results using 3m 5200.Some repairs were structural and held for years after the repair was done.Charlie

Re: Aluminum adhesive

I would be VERY cautious trying to "glue" aluminum to aluminum. The problem is that bare aluminum oxidizes almost instantly after it has been cleaned. It is this oxidized layer that will compromise the integrity of the bond. If you were able to first anodize the aluminum and them glue it you would obtain much better results. IMHO I would not attempt this if it were below the water line. The best way is to weld it but if you are trying to weld 1/4" plate to thin material it would be impossible to do. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Aluminum adhesive

Reading from an adhesive manufacturers tech sheet on this, it makes the following recommendations:

SIKAFLEX 291/192 for Marine Applications
Aluminum
Grind surface lightly with very fine Scotch Brite.
Eliminate dust.
Apply Sika cleaner 205.
After 10 min to max 2 hours drying time, apply Sika primer.
Apply Sikaflex after 1 hour, but latest 24 hours.

Never tried it, but have used Sikaflex products, including the one's mentioned, with amazing success. Secondary load-bearing car body parts are apparently bonded with the same stuff.
