i was just wondering whenever you see older trailers they're always painted steel but nowadays aluminum and galvanized seem to be the norm. I was curious as to when they started becoming big?

Probably when they got tired of painted trailers rusting away in Salt water, here in the midwest and in most of the noncoastal areas painted trailers are the norm, of course you still see Galvanized and aluminum here and there but Painted steel is far and away more popular, its a coastal thing!!

I think that aluminum and galvanized have become more reasonable in price over the years. Along coastal areas, but slightly inland, people would try to get away with painted trailers. It was risky. But since the alum and galv prices have become more stable, it's easier to justify getting one instead of painted.

Far inland, far away from salt, I still think painted trailers rule the day... especially after navigating 11 bajillion boat ads in which I pursued a non-salt-water boat on the slightly used market. Man... it's 99.8% painted inland.

I have a steel made trailer and I use my pontoon boat in brackesh waters.SO after cleaning up the trailer in the spring or fall I spray the trailewr with Zinc Rich Galvanized spray paint. It comes in a 13 oz spray can. I get it at our local Hardware store for about $9.00 It's made by CRC.So I know it's a good brand. It says on the can that it's 95% pure zinc, Drys fast.and looks good.
