Looking for small 14ft boat to run antique and classic tiller motors on .. I found this one not too far from me .
https://daytona.craigslist.org/boa/d/ormond-beach-14ft-jon-boat-trailer-no/7029473165.html
I have spent a good bit of time looking and for what I want this for the most part should work .
This would be my first tin boat so not real sure what to look for and where .. Corrosion ? Holes or pits ?
If the bottom looks ok I'm thinking of a 500 offer .. Does that seem like a fair offer ?
Thanks for any thoughts ..

I wouldn't be surprised if that is what he is expecting to get. So if you really want to lowball him go in at 400.00 , (Sounds like he wants to unload it and as mentioned the worst he can say is no thanks. ) Then if you really want it , move up to 450,then 500 .I think if you start at 5 he is going to counter at 6. Would be nice if you could dunk it and check for leaks.

I was waiting for little more replies... now two already. Did you really see the boat or at least the pictures? There's no boards (for seating), and looks like he was trying to make a platform across half of the boat. It's painted too (could be nothing or cover up?). There seem to be no yellow capacity label (how would you know if your motor is capable for this boat). But, it's cheap enough and with a trailer, make sure you make aware of what you might have to put in and work on it. You could write down that FL boat number, and call the state, that they should tell you the HP rated (and other information such if required to registration).

It would fit the bill. It is a lot deeper than the Jon boat I almost saw the white light when a gust of wind lifted the bow and took on water over the transom until I could scurry to the bow. Be careful is all. If my father ever taught me anything was there is no such thing as an embarrassing low offer. Mom and Dad once bought a condo in South Fla. for almost 1/2 the ask price. All they can say is no like GA said.

CNT, the DMV/Tax collectors down here in florida are not as friendly as they are in WI and really dont help much. in addtion, there are lots of boats down here for sale compared to the midwest. plus, not sure Sam is looking for another project, he is looking for a test mule for old outboards

sphelps , if you need a boat to just run, you can come borrow my old late 50's 14' fishing boat. other than chalking paint its fine.

CNT you might want to stay in your lane ! I know you mean well buttttt . Are you not posting up about buying boats and motors and pretty much saying your a newbie at this ? It's not unusual for a aluminum boat to be painted and it's pretty hard to hide any structural defects on a open tin boat ,painted or not. Three boards take care of the seats as the bases are clearly solid and intact., that pretty much the "work" he has to put into it. Even the transom rebuild if needed would consist of removing of few screws and slapping a 2 x 6 on it , max time for that might be two hours including sealing the wood. Platform could of been for fishing OR bird hunting and that's why the hull was painted green. Just looking at the hull tells me you are not going to be slapping anything over a 30 hp on it and the OP with about 9500 post probably has a clue about what he is going to test on it.

If you pass on this one Alumacraft, and I'm not familiar with the numbers, but the brand made a smoking how open fishing boat back in the 60's which would still be in super shape today.

I am curious, (I am not sure if I am understanding this) you mention are you saying that I am a newbie or I know more than I give credit to myself? I like asking questions when I am jumping into "new" areas. Example, even I know cars well, I still like to ask if a used car is good deal (particular can't hear such engine noise/knocks, rattling, muffler, etc) (admittedly, I am already outdated with cars). I can easily fearlessly go out and buy a boat without any questions, with my good knowledge (but I know you guys would know more, so I like to poke you guys and feed more, like most of you are pointing at LUND boats for me, so that's it (for now), no more Tracker LOL).

OP with about 9500 post probably has a clue about what he is going to test on it.
Oh, forgive me. I didn't see his much postings, otherwise I would fold my ears back (meaning step back).

It sounds like he's a elder gentleman (perhaps redneck), with a old antique motor.

I kinda knew that someone would confront to me when I was typing in posting this. Aggressive ;)

Sorry for little exaggerate about me... hats off to sphelps.

Its time you think before hitting the post button. You seem to have developed a pattern of making odd posts.

Sam is not old and not a redneck, whatever that has to do with him looking for a boat to test old motors he rehabs as a hobby. Personally I'm happy to see a younger person interested in classic outboards.

Well I am 55 ... Kinda feels old and was given the senior discount at the window of a drive through the other day ..
First time that has happened !
I guess it depends on who was judging me as far as being a "redneck" ...I was born and raised in Florida /the south .
I like to fish but I dont hunt . Not that I wouldn't give it a shot .. I fly Old Glory in my yard and not the rebel battle flag .
Not that thats a bad thing for the most part . I like to surf but thats getting harder to do .. I am a conservative .. It,s a free country get over it ..But I dont consider myself an actual redneck though ..Mainly because I have never owned a wife beater shirt ...
It's all good guys ! Thanks everyone for the feedback ! gunna go down now and give this thing a look see . Never had a tin boat ... New territory ...

My only concerns would be:

The bow deck, that seems like its been modified a bit. Something about the aft edge where it terminates at the gunwale seems odd. Cant decide if its been modified or not....

It also appears to have had a trolling motor mount welded to it. Doubt the bow cover would support that very well long term w out modification &/or more support from below, then questions of what & how....

Last thing would be the heavy dose of camo/army green paint hiding some stuff as mentioned.

All & all, for sub $700, as a test mule for old motors, should be a good platform.....

As long as it comes w a trailer and both boat & trailer can meet FL regs/paperwork, else it would need to be sub $400

Good luck Sam and enjoy. Tins a whole new skillset & tools :becky:

And BTW Sam's a good 1, whatever he may be. Showed this northern boy a great afternoon around his homestead, his projects and then a bit of a road trip to see someone else's project he was finishing for a former iboats member's family after the member passed away and is now enjoying fair winds and calm seas forever. :thumb:

Uhhhh you start out looking at a older unpowered and undersized Tracker for what you want to do. Then you move on to a OMC powered boat and after that a boat that clearly has rods holding the transom up . So yeah, go ahead and "fearlessly " buy a boat with your worldly boating knowledge .....

Oh, forgive me. I didn't see his much postings, otherwise I would fold my ears back (meaning step back).
Should always be aware of your surroundings which can be taken in many ways.

It sounds like he's a elder gentleman (perhaps redneck), with a old antique motor.
Not sure what a "elder " or "redneck" has to do with anything . my uneducated guess is he is messing around with mid 50's to mid 60's motors ,which are very reliable antiques.

I kinda knew that someone would confront to me when I was typing in posting this. Aggressive.
Wasn't confrontation as much as it was more of a curiosity as to why you were commenting with your limited background in this. And you even stated " I kinda knew that someone would confront me " So why did you think this ?? And NO I wasn't being aggressive about it [ at least in my mind.]
SO carry on and I will refrain from commenting on any of your multiple threads so as not to hurt your feelings or obvious knowledge of boat's .

Well it followed me home .. Trailer pulled nice ..Its in pretty good shape but it will get some attention for sure ..
We settled on 600 bucks .. The clear signed tittle and trailer registration was worth that I think ..LOL!
The open bow was what I wanted mostly . It makes climbing in and out 100 time easier when it's pulled up to the bank ..
Gunna need a transom and seats .. Probably get rid of the green paint ..The admiral wasn,t really impressed with the ninja turtle green .. It has a bit of silly cone here and there so that will get cleaned up and done something with .. Gluvit maybe ??
And John , the home made trolling motor mount on the bow is actually pretty stout looking ..Not sure if I will leave it or not ..
With these old motors it might not be a bad idea to carry along a trolling motor ..LOL!
And no reason I can't use it for fishing ...:fish2:
