aluminum boat - where to put the rod brackets

under the gunwails on each side of our boat is a piece of carpet over the aluminum hull. we have two open compartments to store stuff. we want to hang rods here. how can we get rod brackets in there without screwing into our hull ... any tension mounts or creative solutions you guys have come up with? looked online and in catalogs with no luck - can't glue to the carpet or we'll hear the rods banging into the hull when we move.

I simply went through the hull for my rod hangers.It does not damage the structure and a bit of silicone on the bolt while screwing it in prevents leaks.

Yup. Just one addition: Stainless steel fasteners. You just buy them once.

I am not good about boating and boats. But I found out about boating after my friend Dominic Villari told me about Boating reference guide that is available at (EDIT). If you read that, you may find all information that you need. Just have a try and look into that, to clarify your doubts.
