Id like to put an aluminum exhaust manifold on my '78 Merc 470; but notice that the aluminum ones have one less mounting bolt hole than the cast one I have now. I know I'll need the riser with the reservoir built in; I'm sure it's possible to install this on my engine but what would I need to do in order to put this one on my engine? Thanks!

You may need to change the mounting studs in the head, you will also need the the water neck that bolts underneath and new t-stat, and some hose changes. And the factory molded hoses may not be available anymore.

Other than spending a lot of money, what are you expecting to gain by going to aluminum? If you say weight, let me ask a question. Can you tell the difference in how your boat runs from a full tank of fuel and when you are down 2 gallons? I doubt it.

Weight isn't really a big deal to me, I'd like to gain a piece that won't corrode as bad as cast. The price for everything I'd need isn't that bad, the most expensive is the riser. My manifold isn't in the best of shape so sooner or later it will need to be replaced...

The manifold shouldn't be corroding, it's on the antifreeze side of the system. Only the riser and half of the heat exchanger sees raw water.

Mine is bad due to poor upkeep; someone filled the engine with water and let it sit for a long time... I just figured if I need to replace it anyway, why not upgrade.

why not upgrade.

The extra money for one thing, and all the other parts you will need that you may not be able to find for another.
Other than that, go for it.

Besides, if you take care of it and keep antifreeze in it, it will outlast the rest of the engine.

Listen to Don. If you put the antifreeze back in the system, corrosion won't be such an issue.

Thanks guys, sounds like its more than its worth. I'll fill it up with antifreeze once my camshaft seal problem is fixed and call it a day.

Re: Aluminum exhaust manifold

The cast iron manifolds are prone to cracking (from heat) and letting water in the #4. The aluminum manifold didnt have this problem but the problem you are going to face trying to put the aluminum manifold on is the angle of the exhaust exit. Your 1970's version exits straight down, while the 1980's era cast iron and aluminum manifolds exit at 45 degrees. You will either have to use a later transom exhaust tube (which means removing the engine) or fabricate an adapter to mate the later manifold to the early style exhaust pipe. There isnt anything commercially available to do that so you will have to come up with it on your own if you dont want to remove the engine.

There is quite a weight difference but other than lifting it to install it, like Don said you arent going to notice any difference in real life. Unless you want to deal with the exhaust studs, different hoses, and adapting the late manifold to the early style exhaust pipe you might be better off looking for a used cast manifold. I see them on ebay and craigslist fairly often, they arent too hard to find.
