Re: Aluminum paint question

Thanks for all your advice guys its much appreciated....I guess the concern I have is I dont have just a few bare spots, I have quite a few large ones. On top of that the entire transom, most of the splash well, and the entire interior of the boat is bare aluminum. Woodonglass I took a deep breath lol...But here are my questions.

Since I have so much bare aluminum, would it hurt to apply the items I purchased yesterday? Wouldnt I have spent that much in the zinc chromate anyway since I had such large surface area to cover? OR.....Are the items I purchased (OMNI AU M170 and OMNI AU MP175 Catayst) not going to work well on my boat anyway?

This boat is not stored in the water, but I am not a casual boater either. I am a tournament fisherman and typically spend atleast 3 days a week on the water. Boat gets beat up pretty good. I know I will not be able to afford a new boat anytime in the forseeable a future, so this boat will probably be around for a very long time.

Re: Aluminum paint question

Also one more question, before all of this came up I sanded down my boat as you can see in the pics. I could not find any disc finer than 220 around here to go on my electric palm sander. Do I need to suck it up and hand sand this 20ft boat with a finer grit paper? Or will the 220 sufice for whatever primer I go with?

Re: Aluminum paint question

220 grit is fine. I usually use 180. My concern with what you purchased is that it is a two part epoxy primer and I am NOT familiar or sure how it will perform on the aluminum and then how the Rustoleum will adhere to it. Just to many unknowns for me. I DO know I have used the Rustoleum products, both the SE primer and Paint with very good results. As you can tell by the comments you are getting there are HUNDREDS of opinions. YOU will have to make the final decision. If you are asking me what I WOULD DO. My FINAL ANSWER IS... Rustoleum ALL THE WAY. Just as I described it in my very first post. Their SE primer always held up good for me IF I sanded, Washed with the Vinegar and Water, Dryed, Primed, and Painted. Following these prep steps always yielded satisfactory results for me. You have heard and read what others have said.

Your decision.
