Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

Hats off to you,the USCG dosent get enough credit. I watched a show on the Discovery channel showing rough water boat handling drills an hour and a half from my house. They were in the SURF navigating 10 foot breakers in a 30 foot boat. I dont know if id have the @alls to do that, really cool though.

NR Boater,
My 12' is a Meyers, 1962?, riveted, deep vee, as stable as I've been in without going to a flatbottom. It was hurled over a barn and approx 200 yards into a field by a tornado, no leaks.

My 15'+ is an Alumacraft, 1958?, HEAVY, riveted runabout, very deep vee, dropped off the trailer, bounced down logging roads, a few small seepage leaks somewhere. Popped only 2 rivets, both from where the trailer bunks rubed the heads off.

16' is a Spectrum, by Brunswich, cheaper copy of the earlier Fishers. Welded, modified v, side console fishing set up. I love it as a fishing platform, but really don't like the ride or handling. The mod v will pound the snot out you and you really have to power down to make any sort of turns. You can see where every reinforcement is on the bottom of the hull, from pounding on the waves. You don't want to be in this boat, with 18-24" chop, and be trying to beat the storm back to the launch.

Yes , the high quality welded boats you mention are just that. And I would rather have one of those too, along with a deep vee hull, and a 150hp Merc.

Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

i am not sure what gauge the aluminum is but the plate on the boat calles for 16 hp max and 660 lbs of weight. i thought that was alot for a little 12 footer way more then i would ever put in it. i am wanting to use this for the local river, just some peice and quiet with my lady.i would like to do alittle light fishing from it. using it with a trolling motor most of the day since its a no wake zone.we where lookin at canoe but i thought that this would be more roomie.plus canoes in this area are going for about 3-4 hundred with no trailer.the guy is asking 600 for this with boat, trailer, motor.i am not really a boater and this would be my first boat.i just hate buying things that i dont really know much about.

Wayne,
Go for it. On a 12 footer, even if it has a leaky rivet or two, they will be easy to get at.My 12 footer was upside down and a tree fell on it. I took the seats out and pounded it back into shape, drilled out the bad rivets and replaced them with new ones (not pop rivets)set them with a hammer and a chunk of iron and it is just fine.I just toss an old piece of carpet in the bottom for noise control.
OMC

Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

Wayne...imho, if the motor and trailer are in working condition, and the hull looks reasonably sound, that would be a great boat for what you wanna do. Leaky rivets are easy to fix if there are any. I've spent many hours on the water in a boat like that and I would jump on it in a second, if I didn't already have too many boats. It would make a great first boat, should be mimimal on the maintenance too...just my Thoughts

Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

Hey, just wanted to say I've enjoyed all the postings. I just bought a 14' lowe that's riveted and unfortunately I didn't notice some caulking underneath when I bought it (on a rainy day - not a good idea). It's got some nice storage area and seats mounted up high and came with a 9.8 mercury and trailer for $800.
With all the crappy weather, I've yet to get it out to see if it might leak. It's rained a few times, but it also came with a cover so I didn't get to check for leaks underneath. --I guess I should pour some water in and check it eh? :D Anyway, it's carpeted so I won't be able to get to the rivets if it starts leaking. Any suggestions on how to repair if I discover a leak? I guess I should be careful about leaving it on the lake overnight until I figure this out eh? (I never thought about that until reading some of the postings here. Thanks again!).

Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

Wayne, I have a Monark riveted aluminum flat(bateau) that I bought new in 1964. It is built of .072 aluminum & has a rib every 12". I have run the same old 18 Evinrude on it since new. I have been in rough water in the Gulf of Mexico and in shallow marsh ponds as well as quiet rivers. Its been used for fishing & duck hunting. Never has leaked, and if it ever does, I have a rivet gun that I can use to tighten up the rivets. I think if you want the 12 footer, you better buy it before someone else does.

ok IM on my 16th boat have had crestliners lunds princecraft alumacraft smokercraft and starcraft

the welded boats handle rougher water better except the lund ( which I lost a filling in my tooth while in it ) rivited boats age better I continue to go back to my starcraft because ( in my opinion) it handles rough water best just my 2 cents

Re: aluminum riveted boat ?

method of construction has nothing to do with how well a boat rides or handles. hull design and weight have everything to do with it. aluminum boats will eventually develop leaky rivets or cracked welds from work hardening. the thinner the metal the sooner it happens.

Wayne,

Could it be an Aero Craft? If so, I am intimately familiar with them. They were built in my home town-St. Charles, MI. A town of about 2000 people.

I knew the owners family quite well. They were very well built boats.

As a matter of fact, we still have two Aero Craft Aluminum canoes, in the family. They are both about 1965-7 vintage. Neither leaks a drop. Kind of hard to believe looking at the bottoms of them-pretty rough.

wayne,

I have a logo from one of the old boats. They had two different logos. One was cursive script, the other was block letters on an aluminized sticker.

I'll see if I can get a picture of it tomorrow. I also have an old brochure circa 1967.

What's your e-mail address? If you don't want to post it, send it to me at: djohns19@peoplepc.com

Miloman,

How did you like the Princecraft? How do they compare to the newer style? Curious because I bought one new a year ago and would like to hear from the voice of someone who has tried a few.
