ALUTHANE - any test information !!!

Long time I have read a forum and I try to find any review about ALUTHANE. Search engines returns generally advertizing from the producer and the recommendation to someone to use. Some words came from camper builders forum, not much and he has used Aluthane on plywood.:blue:
Has anyone experience to use ALUTHANE for painting bottom part of the aluminum boat, the motor? I will be grateful for any information and recommendations, PICs with white paper on painted surface will help to determine how its white and shine.:hail:

I can not give first hand evidence/testimony however....... that Epoxy Products place is on my list to visit this summer. It appears to be about 2 hours away

Depends on what you are painting and what you are trying to accomplish....... the cheap end of painting which gives satisfactory results is the rustoleum/tractor supply enamel...... the higher end is awlgrip.

I have used both methods and being very honest...... the rustoleum works great and is easy to touch up. Depending on the boat.....if it is trailered and removed from the water it will be just fine.

I'm looking for good bottom paint for my McKenzie to cover dings and scratches and durable to rocks. I'm in a Rocky Mountains area. Tractor supply paint is not available here (closest store in Arizona), rustoleum is cheap, but NOT FOR SUBMERGED SURFACE warning on a jar.
Sometime I have my boat 2 - 3 days in a water. Will it make paint white and then start loose? Nightmare to remove this paint from the bottom of the boat will come to reality.

There is NO paint that will stand up to knocks and scrapes on the bottom from rocks! They will all scratch an chip! The High priced AwlGrip Epoxy based paints will scratch and gouge if scraped on rocks. The Rustoleum or Tractor Paint (both are oil Alkyd Base Enamel Paints) will allow you to leave your boat in the the water for 2-3 days. You can add the Hardener to them for added durability to the paint but again, there is no paint that will stand up to rock scrapes. I;m the aluthane vendor. The product is an aluminum filled MCU - moisture cured urethane. Google MCU - this class of coatings not well known outside of the professional industrial paint community. Typically used in places were normal prep (ie sandblasting) not an option.

We have a truck vendor that uses 50 gallons a month - folks also use it on boat lifts, aluminum boats, -- even historical bridges on the National Historical Registry. Seems like I sold some a few years ago for use on Fire Lookout Towers.


For abrasion resistance the common DIY fix is fine sand mixed with epoxy (rock vs rock) -- as a brush on - wear off - resin coating.

The aluthane is a tough but thin coating. Touch compared to other paints, but no match for rocks etc. Mostly known for outstanding MCU adhesion (get it in the rim of the can and you will not get the lid off) and long life of a metallic coating.

Well, probably I'll be first here to test Aluthane and testify to forum. Paul, what is your advise - how much aluthane I need to paint bottom and transom 16.5 aluminum boat, how many coats, is it better to have in quart cans or 1 gallon? What a reducer i need to use spray gun?

Hi...I used the stuff 2 summers ago on a aluminum boat modification project. The stuff works great. I did 2 coats and the stuff is fantastic. Very easy to use but, once you open the can use have to use it up. I painted a boat trailer with it as well. As far as holding up is like any bottom paint but, it's extremely durable. My boat bottom looks like it did 2 years ago with only minor scratches. It seals excellent too. 1 qt. did a 14' v-hull & trailer. Where gloves to paint...this stuff won't come off.

Go to this site and contact the guy. He'll answer any questions. This is private label stuff so there may not be any test info yet...Two part epoxy marine garage floor boat epoxy resin

see ALUMINUM PAINT - Aluthane - MCU coating INFO PAGE for pics of it on an aluminum boat.

had a customer restore a 1950s aluminum boat with green trim back to original look. Had another customer us it on a boat lift in florida. After about 2 years they had low water and he was impressed with how good it was surfaces normally submerged.

Note it is a MCU coating ( moistured cured urethane) a type of coating most diy and boating folks have no experience with.
