I saw this add on CL. Its a very similar motor to mine and should be plug and play.

1999 Johnson 115HP Outboard Motor

I've got a 2001 90hp on my boat that runs good. But i've found myself looking to up my power a bit. My Toon is rated for up to a 135 Hp motor. Anyway I'm just curious what you guys may think about this swap. Assuming I'd trade in my current motor for this one. Since its a dealer I'm sure I'd have to kick in a few bucks for the HP, but how much more would you give? 25hp could give me a bit more speed for tubing and getting off the lake in a storm. I boat on a large lake.

Opinions?

Remember, the rule for advertised HP is plus or minus 10%. It's quite possible that your 90 is putting out 99 and the 125 is putting out only 112hp. You need to compare actual outputs of various motors, not hp ratings

Re: Always looking...repower question.

My guess is there is very little difference in these 2 motors, but its worth checking the spec sheets on both to make sure. Could very well be the same engine with different set ups, an extra 25 isn't a ton, guess it depends how well yours runs, and then the big unknown, how well that one does? Have you played with what you have, meaning props, and engine position, to get the most out of her? that might be a ton cheaper, and could deliver close to the same result. Might save ya some serious coin too. 90 is a good size outboard for a toon, it's also what I run on my walk though, runabout, and it does good.

On a planning hull, 25 horsepower in this size will make about a 5 MPH difference. On a displacement pontoon, it will give much less increase. Stick with the engine you have and save some money.

Re: Always looking...repower question.

thanks for the replies. Those were just the opinions I was looking for. While my 90 hp has treated me well, I can't help but be on the lookout for more HP. I'll stick with my current motor for now. thanks again.
