Always water in the bilge.

I have a 1987 Reinell 215c with 5.7L OMC Cobra and for the last few years, every time we retrieve the boat from a days boating and pull the plug, there has been some water come out. Not a whole lot, maybe 1/2 gallon or perhaps a little more. Well, yesterday I took out all of the rear seating and bulkheads, etc., and took it to the repair shop.

The mechanic wanted to get the boat wet so we headed to the launch ramp just a short trip away, and I backed it into the water. That was a little strange for me because the only thing we did was put a plug in it. Left the tie-down straps attached and everything. Just felt weird. BUT! He says the water appears to be coming in down low on the starboard side. The space is pretty tight so it was difficult to see well, but he thinks it is coming in around the outside of the tube where the shifter cable goes through the transom plate. That means that I will have to pull the engine, probably the y-pipe, and possibly the outdrive just to fix it.

But the purpose of this thread is not so much to ask for advice, but to ask if anyone else has had this problem, did you fix it yourself, and how much did it cost? I am just trying to ascertain if this is a common problem or did I just get "lucky".

Thanks,

Wayne

btw, I found out that when the big quake comes and floods this area, my boat will still float, even with the trailer attached. :D We backed it in just far enough that the boat AND trailer were moving around in the water.

Have you even taken the O/D off to see if there is any water in the bellows or O/D?

I wouldnt jump so quick and pull the engine just b/c he said that.

Re: Always water in the bilge.

Just had that checked about a month ago and there was water in there. The bellows, u-joints, gimbel bearing, shift cable, etc. etc. etc. were all replaced at that time. I have had the boat out twice since then and water is still coming in so it isn't any kind of residual water.

Thanks,

Wayne

You have have a leaking exhaust tube gasket, or leaking transom seal.
