Am I being paranoid?

I just got my boat back with the new 2005 Yamaha 90 HP on it.<br /><br />Heres my question...<br /><br />I fish out on the coast frequently am a little worried about the splash that the engine takes when fishing off the kicker. The engine is off and we will hook a fish. I then put the kicker in nuetral and we are sometimes turned into the swell by the wind. At times I get a pretty good wave of water hitting both engines.<br /><br />Is this something I should be concerned with? I really want to baby the new engine and dont want anything to harm it.<br /><br />searun1

Even though you know you are paranoid, it doesn't eliminate the possibility that "THEY" are after you. <br /><br />Motor is off, boat and motor stay afloat, you should be ok.

You are OK, Just flush the engine and hose it down when you are done boating in the salt, apply a good coat of wax and be happy.

They are made to get wet! Just as long as your cowl is properly attached, you'll be fine.<br /><br />Did you hear that????......There it is again....

Thanks fellas, but I'm sure you know how it is with a new baby. This one took great pains to achieve so whatever I can do to prolong its life the better! This is what started my fretting about this question. It comes out of the Yamaha manual under mounting the engine...<br /><br />"NOTE:<br />During water testing check the bouyancy of the boat, at rest, with its maximum load. Check that the static water level on the exhaust is low enough to prevent water entry into the powerhead when water rises due to waves when the outboard is not running."<br /><br />I guess maybe I don't really understand what this means and maybe I'm not explaining it right what my concern is? Can water force its way into the engine from behind when the engine is not running?<br /><br />Searun1

Guess it means that the bottom of the powerhead itself, should stay above the waterline, to prevent water from being force into the powerhead thru the exhaust.<br /><br />Think you would have to put the base of the powerhead under water and keep it there for awhile to force the water into the block.<br /><br />Did you hear something? I know I heard something, or someone.<br />Who's there?

I know where these warnings are comming from - - IF water gets under the cowl - - and another big IF it gets sucked into the engine when started or run - - there is the possibility of the water getting sucked into the motor - - that can cause detonation in the cylinders AND that can cause you to turn your wallet upside down and shake vigerously.
