Re: Am I being taken??

SOMETHING IS WRONG!... I'm taking my boat to someone else and get a second opinion. If this guy is really just an honest guy (I shouldn't be so negative)... Then I apologize.. but I smell something fishy. If he thinks its worth 3500.00 the way it is..then I think its worth fixing. I only paid $4500.00 for my boat./QUOTE]

good luck and stick to your guns

after seeing your picts. even worse case it looks like it would be worth a re power but hopefully you can get by for much less

Re: Am I being taken??

I hear ya on getting a second opinion. Last year when my force (also a 150) had water in the cylinders, the mechanic I took it to told me the engine would never run again.

The second mechanic I took it to told me he didnt want to work on a force but that he was extremely confident I could get it running again without too much trouble and gave me a list of things to look for. Very helpful and I've since been back to his place numerous times to purchase odd's and ends.

Being the curious type and having done some car work I decided that I'd take a look at it. New exhaust gaskets, new lower unit seals, and a cylinder head gasket + remachine later and I got it running great.

These engines are really easy to work on especially if you have a manual and a forum like this to help out. Good luck!

i hear that some 1990ish bayliners have a thicker hand laid hull. Something about the parent company also makes a high end boat and some of the bayliner models were made in that factory using their methods. Maybe somebody here knows about this myth and can ghive details?

Perhaps he wants your boat because you have one of those hulls?

When I first got out of my truck at the shop...He said "Thats a rare boat, where did you get that?" I said we purchased it in MO. My thought was "rare style" because you can't find this style of boat (Powered Catamaran) in this area. Maybe you are right. I would sure like to know.

HA! Yea... I think i'll keep it. Its tough finding a boat in Texas heat that hasn't been completely destroyed by the sun. We took another look at the boat last night and other than the spark plugs being loose it doesn't appear that the Engine was even touched. We attempted to start the Engine to see if we could see water in carbs or cylinders and we saw nothing. It appears to be the same as it was when I took it there. No water anywhere in Engine that we could see. We took it to a Authorized Factory Warranty Center for Merc, Force etc. last night. I explained what the previous mechanic said and he told me that it was very unlikely that it has a cracked block or anything like that. He said he doesn't see that in the force Engine very often. IF there was water, it would be from a blown gasket which is no reason to replace an Engine. He did agree that the Force 5 Cyl is not a very powerful Engine for such a large and heavy boat and did say that I would be happier with a 175 Merc 6 Cyl... I wouldn't spend the money on that, I mostly use the boat for cruising, fishing, hanging out.. I don't have a need for speed.
He also said that the boat is very rare in this area.. and that he has only worked on one Rendezvous in the past. He acted more normal for a mechanic HA! He wasn't drooling and crying over my boat..He could have cared less .. They are 7-10 days out from looking at my boat so I will update when I know more.

He's not a crook, just a guy that isn't qualified.
