Ok... here's the deal...

1 12' aluminum boat with a motor (can't honestly remember)--- needs work but easy fix up

1 14' classic 50's runabout with 40 hp lark (I think) only running on 1 cylinder but cosmetically in decent shape. Boat is a disaster and needs a complete re-build --- aka massive amounts of tearing apart and many early mornings worth of tlc.

1 trailer --- old but has new tires and will need work.

Guy wants $500 for everything... I have offered $350 for everything. I am in no rush... so I can wait it out and see if he thinks he can get the $500 he thinks he can get.

Sorry no pics... but lets just say everything needs to be redone and leave it there.... So am I being stingy or correct in feeling that $350 is reasonable for everything... :)

I think I have had to high of dose of Aluminum to think clearly... :)

Re: Am I Being to Stingy Here....

I have heard of buyers remorse..But never offer remorse"..You feel guilty or something?
If that is the case I would have had to turn down my 18 foot SS for 250.00..

The lower you can get it for, the more $$ you have for materials. Your time is already written off, at least help yourself out a little by saving some cash upfront.

Savy business deals are just that, deals. The other party can always say no or counter.

Ya last boat/motor combo I paid $80 and felt well.... almost guilty for it! Ya... I know... it's odd... but just wanted to know if $350 is too much!! I'm kinda thinkin it is...but it's kinda a neat vintage boat...

Man I like your thinking there...

I was just gonna walk away and leave it until he couldn't get a buyer and offer him less! My thought was a quick "Fix and Flip" of the 12' and motor to pay for the 14'/trailer/motor and then have a free shell to start with... but your idea is far simpler...!

Re: Am I Being to Stingy Here....

True story..
When I was a much younger dude, I had a vintage 1964 Fender Mustang guitar..Beautiful guitar.
I knew I was going to need to sell it, so I had a bunch of my friends call the local pawn shop asking if they had any vintage guitars, namely a Mustang...Nope they didn't.
A few days later I walk in with what? A vintage Fender Mustang guitar..
I got dang near my asking price, instead of the usual "I can't sell it" I have to make twice the money" pwn shop story..

lol

Stingy, no, I'd say shrewd.

I do like CBK's advise and the pawn shop story.

I am always looking for the $100 tinny. I have a few motors that haven't sold and if a cheap boat comes along, a nice package is born.

Cbk... just re-told that story to Admiral... she lol!!! Thought it was great as do I!!! Glad that she supports me in this and thinks this forum is fantastic!!! Anyway... I will wait and see. Cool part is, I have hooked up with a marina. Any tinnies they won't or don't want to sell, they now call me!! How cool is that. Its nice to know that tongue's of all types can be saved from the crusher!

Re: Am I Being to Stingy Here....

Guy came down to $400 --- but will throw in a brand new kicker attachment, an extra gas tank and a swim ladder...

hmmmmm. Thinking I will sit on it for the weekend and then hold my offer... According to Kev, if he really wants it sold...

The little boat has a 9.8 merc on it.

I think I will stop by and snap some pics tonight and see what everything again with fresher eyes...

Ooo

how old is that lil 9.8 merc?

I picked up a junker one of those, now it's my fishing engine, so quiet, smooth, and sips the gas :)

I can troll around for days with 3 gallons of 50/1

I bet you can get it lower too, no way that guy want's to sit on that IMO. ;)

Re: Am I Being to Stingy Here....

Sounds good, I might be inclined to show up w/ $250-300 in cash, & at least $50 in $10bills.

Offer the $250 again with a flash of cash, not 2 $100's & a $50, in $20'ss, maybe see if he'll go for anything less then $300..... But w/ a kicker bracket & the 9.9, $300 still doesn't sound bad for 2 boats, a motor (?or 2?), trailer & whatever else... Actually $400 doesn't either, but CBK is right, pay less have more available for the rehab :)

Take the $250.00 in cash, hold it out and tell him he can have the money or the boats, but one of them is yours. Don't smile or frown. If he hesitates, tell him "I understand, thanks and at least we got close" and head back to your vehicle. He'll stop you before you close the door.

Bottom feeder class # 2 - When to walk away....

There are times when you need to walk away... and this was one of them. Took a closer look this eve...

12' boat

- leaned on the back of the transom... noticed that the transom is actually cracked or split down on either side of the motor about 2"
- thought there was mud on the bottom of the boat where the transom meets the hull.... but it wasn't mud. It was a large fibreglass patch over a decent sized hole
- whole bottom of transom to boat bottom was also fibreglassed ---not just dirty
- 9.8 merc... completely seized. Otherwise looked good.

14' boat

same fiberglassing on hull and transom
Hole in hull
Trailer.... needs some work... but good winch!
Rest of boat....the usual.

Just didn't feel right. For free or $50 bucks...ya. but not for $350!!!!

Lesson - look twice before leaping!!
