I'm in the process of replacing the deck in my boat(the floor) I was planing on replacing the stringers and transom also. The stringers are solid, exect for the exteme stern(back) foot or so. I will replace the rot on the stringers but leave the rest. the transom is pretty solid and dry except for 2 soft spots(about 6x6). Am I crazy for wanting to replace the whole transom? Will a patch job be just as strong as a replacement if done properly. Don't want to have to do this again to this boat.

thanks,
chad

Re: Am I crazy?

Unless it's a small enough patch that it'll save significant work, it's probably best just to do the whole thing.

If you're doing repairs with epoxy, then the patch would be stronger than the original, however.

Everyone doing what you're doing has the same thought - "I never want to do this again".. but it doesn't make sense to build a boat that'll last a century... it won't, without maintenance and repair.

Keep in mind that rot is caused by a fungus. Unless you get it ALL out or kill it it will continue to grow. Do a search on antifreeze. Yes - - antifreeze.
