I may swap in a remanufactured longblock 350 in place of my 305. If I do so I want to have all gaskets and seals on hand and not have to go looking for anything while doing the job. I will list what I think I will need, and if I am missing something please let me know.
-oil pump gasket
-oil pan gasket
-timing chain cover oil seal
-timing chain cover gasket
-fuel pump gasket
-exhaust manifold gaskets
-Intake manifold gaskets
-intake manifold front and rear rubber seals
-tube of permatex form a gasket
-bolt to set harmonic balancer
-proper oils and lubricants
Thanks,
Sean

Re: Am I forgetting anything

Why not just but a marine gasket set? It would come with all the gaskets you need. It's cheaper than buying them seperate.

As far a Permatex goes I would recommend the Permatex Grey sealer/adhesive. Use it sparingly, in cracks and corners only. I would also suggest leaving out the front and rear intake rubber gaskets and replaceing them with a 1/4 inch bead of this sealer (just be sure the mating surfaces are clean and oil free).

Oil pump and strainer (braized/weld to pump)
Plenty of paint.
Carburetor base gasket.
Plugs, cap, wires, rotor, points, condensor
Block drain petcocks
Thermostat
Belts
Hoses
Manifolds and risers? ? ?
Motor mounts? ? ?
Replacement pullys? ? ?
Water circulating pump
Any sensors? ? ?
Fuel pump? ? ?

Re: Am I forgetting anything

Thanks, my manifolds and risers have only seen 25 hrs and when I run in saltwater I make sure I have a run in fresh within a day,(ocean and big lake are only 1 mile apart). The engine is freshwater cooled.
Why would I want to replace the pullys and motor mounts?
I had not thought of replacing the hoses, good idea and easy to do.
Anyone else?

RP didn't say replace those items he mentioned, I believe he was suggesting you check them.
If the pulleys are all rusty, they will destroy your belts in short order. They could be sanded and painted to be like new.
Motor mounts. You didn't mention rather you have a Mercruiser, OMC, or Volvo, but any motor mounts can fail. Check them. Especially the rear mounts on a Mercruiser setup. They fail and cause the rear of the engine to sag and that kills the coupler.
I sure wouldn't use petcocks in the block. When you drain the block you need to remove the plug completely so you can clean the hole out to make sure it's drained completely and helps to drain any scale, sand, mud, etc.

You could put in one of those oil drain kits if you dont have one already and dont like pumping the oil out of the dipstick...

It is a volvo. I do not like petcocks either. Just remove the plug & let er flow.
Thanks all, I will let you know how it goes.

I called the company I am getting the engine from and they include a complete gasket and seal kit for the swap, as well as a new oil pump.

From Canada Engines near Vancouver B.C. I have spoken to a few people who have puchased their engines and they were very happy. Also checked out well with the BBB, for what that might be worth.

Since you really don't seem to want to part with any information about what model, year, or anything else, I will assume it's a pre 91 setup and suggest you change the bearing or bearings in the flywheel housing.

Then, before you put in, put several extra coats of paint on the pan and timing chain cover. They are like to get pinholes and leak if not painted.

Sorry about that it is a 1981 volvo penta 305 with a 280 leg. Installed in a 1981 Champion Chrisrina 180. I was going to take the tin to a friend who has an autobody shop to get them painted. Good idea abou the bearings tho.

You need to have your pictures "On the web" before you can post them. Places like photobucket.com works perfect. Then use the picture icon above the text box to insert the URL of the pic you get from photobucket.
