So Im buying this boat (1991 Seaswirl OMC Cobra 4.3 190)...put money down and going back to give him the rest next weekend. Anyways a tech looked over it and gave it the ok. price was set a $5500. signed paperwork. Salesman shoots me an email saying that his servive manager noticed a bent prop shaft on it. He said that if I want my money back thats fine but if not it was going to be $500 this is just for parts at there cost. He said he would waive the labor. What do you guys think? Should I pay this? And is $500 reasonable for a prop shaft? Thanks

Back out of the deal. You don't even own the boat and already he's after $500 more of your dollars. Or just tell him, fix it -- its your problem. And then make sure its been fixed. It takes about 30 seconds to check with nothing more than a pencil and a block of wood.

back out. 1st it's an drive train that is no longer supported my the manufacturer. parts are getting hard to find and expensive. Run, find a merc or volvo outdrive, if you want an I/O.

Dont walk RUN away

Remenber OMC = out of business marine corp

I would allways try and help anybody who owned one and strongly advise everybody else to buy a Current MERC or Volvo product that is still supported

If the prop shaft is bent who knows what someone hit with the drive and what other problems will show up later. Back out of that deal! 5500 is a little much for a 16 year old boat with a OMC drive anyway..
Why would they want you to pay for the shaft? They are selling a damaged drive and should fix it at no cost to the buyer..

Obviously you have not had a sea trial. Don't buy any boat you have not taken for a sea trial. The dealer sounds as though he is trying to be fair, but I would agree with the others, Back out. The dealer may have something else you will like.

Thanks for the advice... I sent the salesman an email. I will be searching around for other boats.

Do not buy this boat. Sales pitch to get more money out of you. I would expect the dealership to fix it so that it was seaworthy at time of sale. No matter whether they are "doing it at cost" or not I would buy from a known reputable dealer or from a private sale. Either way as stated earlier you should take it for a trial run no matter what.

Re: Am I getting shafted???

Not that it matters now since you are backing out but the prop shaft cost $322 at Doug Russell so I don't really think $500 was their cost???
