Am I gonna be able to get the carbs off my 850?

Is it possible to get the carbs off a 1977 Merc 850 without upsetting the linkage adjustments?<br /><br />I peer into the front of the engine...and it's hard to tell just how the linkages come apart.<br /><br />It looks like I'd be best off removing both carbs together...with the linkage attached.<br /><br />I don't fear cleaning/rebuilding the carbs as much as I fear having to do a link/synch.....<br /><br />Can someone walk me through the procedure to get them off and back on again?<br /><br />Thanks for reading, Chuck

yep <br /> if it was all syched up before and all it did was sit and gumm up its no worries. yes the carbs have to move together or you will risk breaking the plasitc link. usually if you dont play with the adjustments it will go back together ok.

76 merc 850, just did mine. <br /><br />The choke linkage (black plastic) comes off easily.....Pull that peice away from you and towards the back of the motor. It will unsnap, then push down on it to free it from the bottom carb. <br /><br />The throttle plate linkages are easy as well. Its better to take the bottom carb out first, its almost like a slotted screwdriver fit. The top carb has a fitting on the bottom of it (that looks like an adjustment screw with a slotted head) and the bottom carb has a rod on it that extends up to the top carb. This "rod" has a flat, forged end on it. <br /><br /><br />I wish i could explain it better, but i wouldnt lie to you, if you are mechanically inclined, it should be a breeze. Also, like rodbolt said, keep the motor in neutral (i know with my old 40, i had to put it in gear yada yada, p.i.t.a.....) This one i just kept it in neutral the whole time, went back together with ease <br /><br />If you need help or advice on the rebuild, let me know, i have it down to a t

hmmm....where did rodbolt say that????...almost sounds like we've shifted topic to lower unit removal... <br /><br />OK budman...I just might have questions for you. I don't expect much trouble with the rebuild itself...I have the genuine Merc Manual...but I'd rather not mess with any of the linkage adjustments at this point because everything seems to be set up as good as can be right now.<br /><br />I assume your '76 carb is the same as my '77? (center bowl)<br />

see that little screw on the black plastic link on the lower car? remove it, then move both carbs off the studs at the same time. if you dont remove it its no biggie just make sure both carbs clear the studs at the same time. the top of that plastic link has a metal tang recessed in it that fits a slot on the top carbs throttle shaft. sometimes they break if you move one carb and not the other. take your time and all will be well. if the timing and pick ups were ok and it just sat and gummed up you dont have to do the entire procedure but its nice to verify things with a timing light when done.<br /> when you reinstall the carbs that aformentioned screw will sync the trottle sutters. make sure the throttle pick up is clear and both shutters are fully closed then tighten the screw.

Well...the manual does say to remove the three welch plugs to "examine the bypass holes"....<br /><br />Examine them for what? Clogging? <br /><br />I suppose that if no one here advises me otherwise...and if my Carb Rebuild Kit includes new welch plugs... it is recommended, but they have to be drilled out, and if you arent extrmely carefu, you could possible ruin the entire carb if you drill too fa. the manual withh explain all of this, but you just have to be extremly careful is all

Seakaye,<br />I used an awl/punch to remove the welch plugs....its quite easy. If you haven't already, check out TMD's site for the video of a carb cleaning procedure.

Yes AMD Rules...I've watched that video. He just takes that punch...wacks it with a hammer...and out pops the plug. He sure makes it look easy...and I imagine it is...after all...they are designed to be removed.<br />I won't have the time to do thr hjob until after Christmas...in tghe meantime I'll check e-bay. If I can find a couple of carbs cheap enough...I might buy them just to practice on...and have for parts.<br /><br />Thanks for reading, Chuck
