I am thinking about ordering a Nissan 18hp four stroke and as usual I am having second thoughts about it especially after reading some posts about them on this web site. Any help is greatly appreciated. What kind of speed can I expect on a 14 foot 700lb boat?

Other than having to wait a month or two in order to get one because they are in such great demand( They are sold out across the U.S.)...I would be a lot more worried about every other brand.

Yes, what IOB said.

Keep in mind that you only see posts about the very few troubles here, not the thousands that seem bulletproof.

Tohatsu makes the Nissan engines. Tohatsu is one of the top rated and top selling brands all over the world.

If your boat is 700lb fully loaded and has a fairly flat bottom you can expect performance in the mid 20s to about 30 WOT.

Good luck. :)

yes. i have owned many many tohatsu's and nissan's, or was that toe-what-sue?

great bullet proof motors.

most of the world doesnt know of their great motors, cause they never sponsor kingfish tourny's , at least around here.

but i'll tell ya , when tohatsu starts making large motors in the 150-250hp range, and they start showing up on larger offshore style center consoles, only then will the people at large understand just how kick azz these motors really are.

untill then, its just the chosen few that know!!

mike

Tohatsu just can't build them fast enough. There are some coming in each month, but by the time they get here they are already sold to fill backorders. I'm sure that some dealer, some where, probably has one on order that isn't already sold, but that's going to be like looking for the proverbial needle. With Tohatsu now selling their 30 hp and smaller engines to Mercury, Tohatsu just does not have the ability to produce the extra units to catch up.

IOB, are all of the 30 hp and below mercurys made by tohatsu? How big or how much does toyota have to do with tohatsu. I am a big toyota fan , not so much a nissan fan . I am talking cars and trucks here. But I am looking for my last 25 hp o/b for my 14' big jon. This place is OUTSTANDING! Im sure many like myself can not say thanks enough for the light some of the members here shed. Hats off to iboats and its outstanding members. :)

The 30 and down from Mercury are Tohatsu's, with the possible exception of the 15 hp...That one is up in the air. Toyota does not have any involvement with Tohatsu. Toyota did get involved with a ski boat in the U.S. for awhile, but they bailed out of that a few years ago. To the best of my knowledge Toyota is not involved in the marine industry at all.
