Re: Am I under proped?

It does not sound like its that high. I did not go higher than "7,000" but I was told by the previous owner that it might not go much because it was "adjusted" to not go higher. I'll try next time...

I also need to adjust the reverse, it's not engaging...

Hmm...not sure about the reverse thing....sounds like your cable needs adjusted though, and you may have a faulty gauge. I bet if you unhook the gauge and ramp that baby up, you will move along no problem. Not engaging in reverse, could be many things, including a lower unit problem. But id check your cables and adjust them all first.....if its engaging one way it will probably engage the other. Use your common sense, make some adjustments. Your tach def isnt working right though. Run your engine wide open, and check your speed. I bet youll be moving along around 43 mph or so! If it is limited b/c of the tach, unhook your tach (not sure how to do that!)

Re: Am I under proped?

Someone told me here that it should have a rev limiter set around 5300 rpms. So if it does, I'll know.

Thanks so much your input and advise. I will keep you posted on my findings...

Sorry but I have to chime in here. The beam in not on the bottom of your boat. The beam is the widest part of your boat at the top. The point on the bottom is called the keel and runs the length of the boat and finally the bow is the front of the boat. Also so we don't get anything else confused  the back of the boat is called the stern. Just my .02 worth

they are correct...looks like i should go over my boating basics again :p

keel, not beam!

and based on my logic, the transom is the front of the boat :p

Re: Am I under proped?

On my jet ski I would have to either have the prop bent or replaced after every little mod I did to it. Even on the same setup I gained 2+mph with a different prop and can get another 1.5-2.5 mph with fine tunning...

You have a jet ski with a prop on it?

Re: Am I under proped?

Well I was finally back on the water. At max 6800 rpm it was going 30.2 mph. Now, I know the tachometer is wrong since its reading 4000 rpms on idle. The wire I guess was adjusted to not pass 6800rpms because it was all the way down. I think I was really at about 4800rpms...?

How do I adjust the cable? And how do I adjust the reverse cable since its not engaging...?

You are probably idling around 1k approx. That means your guage is reading 3k higher than what you really are running....so you were really only running 3800 RPMs...30 mph seems a little slow, but not too bad. Take your engine cover off, (when the engine is off, of course) and max out your throttle. See if you can pull the throttle lever on the engine any more. If so, your cable is probably stretched or out of adjustment. I am guessing that is the issue. You should be able to run around 5000-5500 RPMs safely on that motor; If it wont even let you get that high, I am willing to bet its b/c of a cable issue....try that, tell me what you figure out....

Also, if your engine is governed, take that fu***** tach off! it sounds like it is no good. Tachs are tricky to work with, so i dont mess with them and dont know much about making them work again...Sounds likke it might be limiting you.

Re: Am I under proped?

I was told that the tach was set up for a V6 engine and that was probably why is was reading incorrectly?...

Re: Am I under proped?

You really need to use some common sense here
You know you have the wrong tach and the wrong trim and come here for prop advise??
Get your boat running right then ask about your prop.
Fix the trim get the right tach.
After you do all that come back and ask about your prop.

Possibly....at any rate, your tach is off...id take it somewhere to get it working right, removed, and/or have the correct one put on. I bet that would solve 99 % of your problem.
