It makes little difference what you bed them in, the only purpose is to space the stringer slightly off the hull, not to bond them in place. Any of the adhesives flex far more than resin, so by the time any load was applied to it the the fiberglass would have already failed.

where can I get the best deal on two caulk cartridges of 5200 caulk?

Sites have them priced at $11 to $23 each!
I was talking about the PL, use it!!!! Home depot, $7 bucks for the big tube.

I used PL to bed my stringers, bond the decking to the stringers, and as filler in quite a few spaces. Waterproof, flexible, amazingly strong. Goop it in, let it set for 24-48 hours, the stuff is great.

Can I also use it as a substitute for 5200 when I screw the deck to the stringers by drilling the holes, filling with caulk and then set the stainless screws in?

If I can use the PL instead of ordering the 5200 it will help out a lot. Ordering 5200 will take days for it to get here and not help me in paying off the credit card. :(

The previous owners of my Batboat liquid-nailed a giant bat to the stern and when I tried to get it off some of the fiberglass hull came off with it. The rest had to be taken off with a grinder. Tough stuff!

BTW, just so your question is answered: Polyurethane Construction Adhesive

That is the stuff I am using for my restore. It sticks nicely, is (semi)soft even when cured and you can shape it nicely with your fingers (or a stick, etc) when used as bedding. I also used it to glue my transom layers together.

Like others have said, it isn't meant to replace glassing, just allow things to sit pretty while you do the glassing. It also makes for great filler, as also noted above.

5200 and 4200 are mainly used for thru hull fittings and finishing touches as opposed to PL's big job construction uses.

As for attaching the deck to the stringers, you can use PL to fill the holes, as you just want them waterproofed as a secondary measure. You still want to glass over the deck for the main waterproofing (and support). I'd recommend putting a fat bead of PL on top of the stringers prior to laying down the deck, as that will provide some cushion and help to keep any gaps from forming between deck and stringer.

Exactly what I needed to know. I'm heading down the street to Lowe's tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks. :D:D:D:D:D:D
