Amazing fish

I just installed a Garmin 140 and took it out for a test this weekend... seems the fish in our lake are attracted to my boat at any speed above planning.

I mean these fish are fast... they congregate under my boat and can keep up with me at 30, 40 MPH !!!! but when I come down to idle speed they all get scared off.

Anyone else ever have this experience?

LOL trick question? It would appear that your transducer is too close to the turbulence of the motor and water speed....Try adjusting it further from the motor and then you will see NO FISH!!! lol

Make sure your transducer is a minimum 12-15 inches to the right of the outside of the propeller to ensure cavitation in the water isn't misread. Very common occurence when installed too close to the prop.

Re: Amazing fish

I just bought and mounted a Garmin 160 on my aluminum boat. And while underway, it showed the same thing on my screen yesterday. I'm thinking that the location of the transducer is too high, near the surface so that the turbulance from the boat is the cause. But by moving it lower, it'll bring the transducer closer to the motor :(.

First turn off the fish symbols. Second if it has a surface clutter control set to a higher setting. I have not seen problems from the transducer even as close a 8 inches from the motor. Make sure the transducer in not behind a row of rivets. Make sure that 1/2 of the transducer is below the hull on the center side. It will be deeper on the out side. If the unit does not have a automatic gain control then turn the gain down when at planing speeds.
