I have read the handy advice on starters posted elsewhere in this forum. On my 90hp johnson (1984) Same results with two fully charged batteries. Bendix wont engage flywheel. Question. The spines(10 of em) on the the drive assembly are dogeared on the top. If I replaced the drive ***, (30$) could this solve my problem? Initially a shot of wd-40 solved problem for a while. Then it was every time. Now lube doesn't help. Have cleaned and lightly sanded drive ***. and bendix?

If the answer is no how do I trouble shoot solenoid before removing starter and replacing or repairing. Thanks in advance. Joe

Re: American Bosch starter help

99% cable problem

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: American Bosch starter help

thanks for the quick reply--I think I removed cables from the problem by going directly from battery to jumper cables to starter with same result. I quess that also bypasses solenoid too.manually twisted drive *** engages flywheel . Could the dog ears be the problem?

Re: American Bosch starter help

the starter gear works on centrifical force, of the starter spinning. either the starter is not spinning fast enough, or the shaft is dirty and gooped up.

Re: American Bosch starter help--update

Going against conventional wisdom , I replaced drive assembly. To my surprise it was one piece unit while the old one was two pieces. Anyway replaced and engine cranks like a champ. I guess this was the 1% when it is not battery or wiring. Lucky it was the cheapest place to start. thanks to all who gave advice and I know feel empowered to tackle the 4000 rpm and up misfire that I have dealt with for 5 years.
