I have to say, Americans have it way better then Canadians when it comes to buying boat engines. So I thought I was going to be able to order the Certified Pre-Owned 4.3L Mercruiser from Mercury Marine, only to find out a week later, we can not get them up in Canada no reason why, they just aren't available here....

Ok plan B, Since my current engine is toast, I may as well spend the the little extra and get the remanufactured 4.3L Alpha 4V 225 HP engine: http://www.mercurymarine.com/repowe...ercruiser-products/plus-series/4-3l-alpha-4v/

I then come to find out I can not get the free 2 year extended warranty because I am Canadian, and that it would be an additional $1300.00 if I wanted to buy it, but if I lived right on the border it would be included....

You know I decided to just edit this (what I said is probably best left to the "Dock-side" chat! and then it would probably get locked there too!!)....

You might be right for a LOT of other different things in retail sales too but it's largely due to the vastly different tax structures.

The only way you'll probably get around it will be to drive to the border and get what you want...

Sorry about that,

Michigan Motorz:
Note: In the event that a warranty claim is required outside the continental United States with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, there may be additional charges not covered under warranty based on local practices and conditions, such as but not limited to freight, insurance, taxes, license fees, import duties and any and all other financial charges, including those levied by governments, states, territories, and their respective agencies which will be the responsibility of the purchaser.

seems fair enough

Mercury trying to keep their heads above water in their own country... probably not too concerned about the Canadian market. I can't really blame them.

Personally, I picked up a brand new V6 GM auto long block in Canada and then drove across the border to buy some dry-joint Merc manifolds and away I went with all new stuff for a fraction of those Merc reman prices.

I would say that they ARE concerned with the Canadian market. but they have to comply with all the regs/laws etc.

My choice would still be to go to a (close-by) reputable engine rebuild machine shop and have them build me an engine. They would most likely offer a warranty and since they're local you'd have personal face-to-face service.

That's almost ALWAYS better than dealing with someone on the phone half a world away where you have to ship to and from and deal with customs, duty, taxes, shipping etc.

Re: Americans have it better.........

You are probably right, we are a smaller market then the U.S. (And believe me I love the States, we travel to tampa bay for almost 3 weeks every winter for the last 6 years) It is just funny to read on their site:

■Factory-trained technicians at more than 4,300 authorized and factory-trained dealers throughout the United States and Canada.
http://www.mercurymarine.com/servic...otection/mercury-product-protection/overview/

That we would not be entitled to the same benefits of buying the same engine. If I buy my car in Canada I have a warranty throughout the US and Canada, and the same if I buy my car in the US, the warranty is still valid in either country. It just seems unfair...

Re: Americans have it better.........

not if it's a Honda, Mitsubishi, VW etc...
do some research before making that next car purchase... a lot of car companies have gotten out of the cross border warranty business.
Here's a more complete list of the ones honouring and not honouring warranty on US vehicles:

Wow!

Makes me want to "dump" my Honda CRV and buy a Ford!!

If I were to drive up to BC on "holiday", I'd have to have my Honda towed back to "Lower America" to get warranty coverage!!!

Thats not what it means. If you are a Canadian and buy your car in Canada the warranty is good in both countries, and if you are American and buy your car in the States, then the warranty is good in both countries. All the Canadian dealerships complained that Canadians were going south to buy their new cars because the cost was/is so much cheaper it was putting them out of business. So that is why the warranty issue comes into play if you are a Canadian buying a car in the US. No American would be crzay enough to buy a new car from Canada and import it into the US, especially with the Canadian Dollar being higher then the US dollar.

Anyway, that is a different circumstance for the marine engine, as they are not produced at all in Canada.

Thanks for that clarification!

By the way Canada your harvesting oil from the same feild but we have but cannot fully develop it... funny what a little can do.Soon your economic wealth our's will soon match our's and you know what we buy 50% of our oil from Canada...:D
just because the harvesting is being done in Canada, doesn't mean Canadians will be harvesting it.
We're watching the Nexen deal closely.

Re: Americans have it better.........

I wanna know how they get 225 ponies out of that Weber-carbed 4.3 ...

, I may as well spend the the little extra and get the remanufactured 4.3L Alpha 4V 225 HP engine: http://www.mercurymarine.com/repowe...ercruiser-products/plus-series/4-3l-alpha-4v/

I think this is just more evidence that the 190HP rating on recent 4.3 2V carb motors is a lot of "sandbagging" of the power rating to give the MPI 4.3 a market
That 4.3 2 barrel is probably making 205 or 210 hp if comparing apples to apples or torque curves to torque curves

My twin 4.3LX 4V's are rated at 205HP. I'm thinking the Vortec heads are the higher ones.
