Amplifier/ Power Pack General Question....Do they have a normal life span?

How long are these generally good for? I'm in the process of replacing mine, 1971 Johnson 85, and I see a lot of questions regarding them here. The one I'm replacing doesn't appear to be very old so I thought it might be me. Do these die from a normal life expectancy or are there factors that can shorten their time span? Just curious if anyone knows.

Other factors. Mostly from the voltage input to them. Especially voltage spikes from loose or dirty battery cable connections, or other sources.

If it still has the "clipper circuit" on it, take it off and throw it away. This was supposed to protect the pack but they did more damage than good.

Thanks for the information. I was swapping over the power pack last evening and was going to ask about the Clipper Circuit, so you beat me to it. Thanks. On the voltage spikes my real thought was about disconnecting the battery over the winter. I usually do it but failed to last winter and it's bothered me since. In my mind I like to disconnect it even if it may not matter, but I wonder if it did matter this time.

Nah, the amplifier doesn't even "see" the battery unless the key is turned on. No harm in disconnecting it, in fact is is better if you do. What matters more is that when you put it back in service, you clean those terminals and cable ends shiny bright and make sure they are tight. The most common voltage problems are right there at the battery.

I thought the same but while tinkering with the boat over the winter if I disconnect the battery then I can't accidently leave the key on, which is easy to do. I know a did it for a period of time this past winter and it's been knawing at me. Good point on cleaning the terminals, they are more likely to be inspected and cleaned.
