This one product seems to cause a lot of controversy around here. Here's my 2-cents worth...

Amsoil makes an excellent product. As a rule, synthetic oils are generally superior to petroleum products and I think we can all agree on that. Amsoil makes a good synthetic product and at least Most of us will agree with that. But to say Amsoil is TWICE as good...I think those that believe that would be a minority.

The conroversy seems to revolve around their 100:1 claims and here's my take on it. For motors engineered to run at 100:1, Amsoil provides better overall qualities than petroleum based oils at 100:1. For motors engineered to run at 50:1, Amsoil provides better overall qualities than petroleum based oils at 50:1.

But to say that Amsoil can be run at 100:1 on ALL outboards is absolutely absurd! That one claim has given a company that produces a good quality product a black eye they can't seem to overcome. Sure there are those that have been lucky and their 50:1 motor survived at 100:1. Then there are those of us that have not been so lucky.

So I guess all I can say is that you tamper with your mixing ratio AT YOUR OWN RISK! Amsoil doesn't test every model of every make and anyone that thinks they do lives on a planet other than this. Motor manufacturers, NOT oil producers have the expertise to say what amount of oil should go in the gas for their motors. They test dozens if not hundreds of each and every model to determine such things. Oil companies DO NOT! Can you use less Amsoil than petroleum oil? Maybe. But you'd be playing Russian Roulette to discover the Minimum amount required.

If you want superior protection for your motor, go Synthetic. But don't mess with the amounts. Would you put 2 1/2 quarts of Amsoil in your car motor that requires 5 quarts? Of course not! That would be stupid. So would adding half of the amount of oil to your gas for your outboard.

That's my opinion. By the way, I don't sell Amsoil. My father did and my brother tried it on our outboard at 100:1 and it locked up tight within minutes after switching to that tank. The motor was originally engineered to run at 24:1. That's my 2-cents worth. If you'd like a refund, stand in line. ;)

Re: AMSOIL In My Humble Opinion...

We had an 83 70hp tripple here on a work boat that within 35hrs of rebuild, slowly started running like crap. After teardown, it was found that almost every piston ring was stuck-galded over. The ownners are Amsoil dealers here, and that's what they started with in this engine not thinking about breaking in with syn.
They, of course, blew a fuse, called amsoil and said hey, we gotta problem with your oil here...
Later it was determined the bore job was not what it should've been, .002 too tight, and even though amsoil knew this, they wrote the company a check for a replacement powerhead, of 2700.00
I think part of this was because of their volume of sales, I don't know...but they did step forward, even though they had a perfect route out'a here.
I'm not gonna bad-mouth that kind of service...
Yes, these engines were designed to be run on 50:1 oil mixture....but that's 50:1 of type "A" oil, containing "X" properties.
Amsoil has created an oil that exhibits type "X" properties of a type "A" oil, at 100:1.
As was mentioned before, the engine doesn't know that, BUT, if you had a bottle of the 100:1 in your hand and poured it into a glass, YOU would know and understand the concept.
Willy, "YOU" is not pointing at you personally, so don't take that wrong.
A 24:1 engine is that way because it has plain-bearings, and needs the thick film to run without contact of metals. To the trained mechanic, the 24:1 is the red flag that tells us it doesn't have roller or ball bearings in most cases, and the equivalant of 24:1 must be used.
They didn't understand the difference, and there-for, created their own problem by going to 100:1, but I'll bet the pistons weren't what locked up.
And BTW for me, I'm listed as an Amsoil dealer, and haven't even bought any from myself!!!
I can tell you this much, and this part IS NOT from Amsoil, One of the Major engine manufacturer's Top of the line oil, is Amsoil HPI with "Their" name on it.....Hope it makes ya sweat....
It's fun to see people bash a product that is exactly the one they use with another name on it!!!
:)

Re: AMSOIL In My Humble Opinion...

Ok,
In a previous post on Amsoil ZmOz told me:
Please, get a clue before bashing any product. First of all, Amsoil is better than any Dino oil. That is a fact.
and
Again, until you at least have a little bit of a clue about Amsoil and the rules here, quit posting.
So I have now searched a multitude of web pages that all say the same thing "Amsoil is The Best Oil in the World". For some reason I'm still skeptical as I have not read one independent comparison or field test that confirms this. In fact I am even more concerned to find that a lot of the products are NOT API certified.

I also was interested to find that other forums are discussing the same issue: http://www.woodalls.com/cforum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/14092189/gotomsg/14108579.cfm
Like this forum, the only people that "sing its praise" are Amsoil salesmen :(

Walleyhed, there are completely different examples of Amsoil's warranty on that site too.

I am a firm believer in synthetic oils which I use in all my vehicles and boats, but it is going to take a lot more than ZmOz or Lubdude to convince me to run a new motor on non-certified oil at 100:1 against the OM's recommendations.

I still have to see "The Fact" that Amsoil is better than any dino oil.

Be warned, if you do do a search for Amsoil be prepared to be inundated with "pop-ups" trying to recruit you as a salesman.

Re: AMSOIL In My Humble Opinion...

Why did you have to do this, Willy?

Haven't we had enough exchange of bad tempered opinions presented as "facts" on this subject?
