I see that Sprint PCS and Verizon wireless both have high speed mobil wireless internet service where I live. It runs between 400k and 900k speed and is a lot faster than the ISDN service I now use.

I was thinking of getting a Mobile Wireless router to power my home network. Its cheaper than the ISDN service by only $10 month, but the speeds are so much better.

I was wondering if anyone uses this wireless service for their home connection and how it performs for them.

BTW where I live there is no DSL or Cable service available. So its ISDN, Satelite or Mobil Broadband.

Hmmmm....well, as a primary connection I would say it's pretty crappy...but then again, probably better than ISDN. I connect through my sprint phone all the time, ping times are horrible, connection speed varies by the minute, and the connection drops frequently for no reason at all, making it nearly impossible to download a big file. My mom uses a Verizon card for work, and she's always complaining about it too.

I use my T-mobile phone for its internet a good bit. It is wi-fi capable, so when I get a wi-fi signal the phone is as fast as my cable network.

Easy answer...... talk to the people at the store and borrow a card. I have done thins many times with phones and area's with weak coverage.

It will depend on signals available in your area.

If they will not lend you a tester then try someplace else.

My son tested it for the school district he works for.
The connection and download speed vary ,but within acceptable limits. The upload speed is disastrously slow.
Wireless as opposed to ISDN and cable, can very easily be tapped and broken into,so it renders the system useless for personal business.

We use Verizon aircards for work. They are not all they are cracked up to be. It locks up and resets constantly.

All I try to use it for is entering data through a VPN connection. It is so bad in so many places that I wait until I can get home to hook up to the broadband connection.

Wow! I am suprised to read that all of you have poor results. I have spent the last 4 days using my sisters Sprint PCS wireless broadband card on her laptop and it was superb! Not once did that connection drop, and the kids were playing Youtube all day. I went to 3 different broadband speed test websites and got speeds usually around 400 - 600k on the upload, and 600M to 1.1M on the download. Ran the same tests over and over and got consistant results. Thats why I was interested in using it for my main net connection.

I work from home at least 1 day a week using a VPN connection, so it should still be safe. I know my sister uses a VPN connection regularly on that PC to connect to her office.

I guess the bottom line is to follow Bob's advice and get a test card to see how well it performs at my home address. I think this is something I will have to follow up on when I get home later this week (after I get tired of running my MFG around the bay.... )

Thanks for all your comments!

Mark.

I guess I should clarify.... I travel all over the DFW Metroplex area for work. There are areas it really rocks, but there are just as many (including my house) where it just doesnt work worth a hoot.
