I know that people here say Bayliners are piles of doo-doo but I just bought one. An 86 Capri.

$800 / No motor.

The upholstery is worn, the floor has been repaired (but is mostly solid) and the transom has very very little flex (my 300+lb butt standing on an outboard motor end). So structurally it's in decent shape, and I expect it to last fine for the summer for me and my 10y/o boy.

I even consider this boat to be a fixer upper. Why? Because it was cheap. I'm becoming accustomed to the idea that pretty much any used boat needing fiberglass work. Or, at least any boat that I'll be able to afford.

I have a 65hp Mercury outboard for it. I need to patch some holes in the transom (about 4 motors have hung on this boat) and hang my motor on it. But as ugly as it is, I can see a nice boat under the surface.

Maybe Bayliners have a bad rap, and I can see that the boat isn't 100% in quality. But if it'll get me on the water THIS season, I'm happy.

That being said, I hope that people will have patience and understanding with me while I use and fix this beast up.

Thanks

You won't get any guffawing from me.

If it's solid, go for it.

Have you seen mine? Look at my signature and click the link.
It should be back in the water Monday!!!
I say let the people whine. They are just jeleous!
Bayliner deserved the rep for a cheap boat.
Which means the guy who bought it did not know/takecare of said boat/motor properly.
Which means a cheap rebuild for me :D

They can be rebuilt we have the technology!
Say---- Na Na Na Na Na.
6 million dollar Man

Better than new as you want to. !

Re: An admission.

The problem with Bayliner is this. Most who bought the older, smaller boats that were of inferior quality didn't know how to take care of or fix them when things did go wrong and that is why they got a bad wrap. Once things started going south on the boats they fell apart with no one to fix them. They also put a Force motor on the back and the motors were not built the best and factory support was almost non existent. Bayliner had no control over that but got the rep for it. I know I have been made out (falsely) in the past to be Bayliner basher but if it meant owning a Chevy or walking I would own the Chevy(and I do). I even like the first size up cuddy cabin (think it is 20’). Like all boats just prepare for the worst and hope for the best and you will be OK. Good luck with it. ;)

Re: An admission.

Its nothing to be embarrased about. Bayliners can be repaired/rebuilt into great boats. Even a stock Bayliner, if well maintained, is perfectly fine. Even knowing all I know about them, I still wouldn't mind getting ahold of an early 90's Capri and rebuilding it. They are good looking boats, and with the right touch, will last as long as you need it to. Good luck and post pics.

Bayliners have a bad reputation here in Aus, not because of the boats themselves, more because of the type of people who buy them (ramp hogs). Best of luck with yours... I reckon all boats are good!

Re: An admission.

Rebuild it right and so that it fits your needs. Remove anything that says "Bayliner". With the changes you make to it no one will be able to tell what it is anyway. If a boat has no brand badge most people will be hard pressed to tell you what it is anyway unless it has a really distintive feature about it.
Then.... and this is the most important part.... enjoy the heck out of it with your son.
I can honestly say if I got the right deal, I would do the same.

Always remember that the worst boat, is no boat at all.

Its like the kid that while riding his bike, wants to talk crap about my truck. It's better than the truck he DOESN'T have!!!

If you can float with your boy, than cheers to you.
