I got this shower caulk http://www.homedepot.com/cmc_upload/HDUS/EN_US/asset/images/eplus/108150_4.jpg at home depot to replace the bad stuff. It works great on the 90 degree angles and it sticks great. Being that It's less then $7.00 I think I'll give it
a try on the keel of my boat. the plastic part
is a soft type so it shouldn't crack. My only
concern is that when the boat gets moving the water
will hit it with a lot of pressure and peel it off.
anyone have any opinions on this before I try it?

From the looks of the picture I believe you will have to use a lot of this stuff to come close to the protection Keelshield or Keelguard affords.

I installed the Keelguard on my boat and it also involves a chemical bonding process which truly makes it stick to the hull.

Frankly, I think you will realize compromized results by not using the right tool for the job.

Kevin

Re: an alternative for keel guard

A guy down the street from me actually used something similar on his boat. He used multiple overlapping strips to get the same coverage as a Keel Guard. On the 3rd day after his installation, it started seperating from the hull in several places. It had not been in the water yet. This leads me to believe that the caulking strips dont have the adhesive power to stay attached while under power.

I'd have to agree. This is the great thing about
forums. You can ask any dumb question you want
and no one knows who you are, lol.

Anything described as "magic" usually doesn't provide the desired results. The "magic" with this stuff is that it looks like you can apply caulking in a straight line. Better to keep bathtub products in the bathroom.

Could you not use 3m 5200 to attact the vinyl strip? To bad the Keel Guard is WAY over priced!
It should be like 25 dollars not 100.

Anything is only worth what people are willing to pay for it...........

If you think the Keelguard is overpriced think about the alternative of paying someone a few hundred sheckles for a gelcoat repair.

Look around a little and you will find the Keelguard and Keelshield alternatives an economy solution to such Keel protectors such as Hambleys keel protectors which cost over $500 installed.

I've seen Keelguards and Keelshields in the Cabelas Bargain Cave (returned merchandise) on occasion for about $25 - $35 less than retail.

Kevin

If it says "marine" in the name, it's gonna be
overpriced.
