At what size boat does a cruser rightfully get called a yacht?

Anything over what? 30 feet? Whats the golden rule on this if any?

in the marine stores, a 15 footer is a yacht. thats cause anything with whe word yacht attached to it costs three times more!

Webster's dictionary says this:
"any of various recreational watercraft: as a: a sailboat used for racing b: a large usually motor-driven craft used for pleasure cruising"


The term is used pretty loosely, but it generally refers to the larger pleasure cruisers rather than the common fish and ski type of runabout.

A very small point is that only an enrolled vessel can legally fly the yacht ensign. This is never enforced that I know of, but an intresting point. The minimum size for enrollment is five net tons displacment. It is hard to meet the five ton rule in a boat smaller than 30 feet in length.

I have always felt that if the next guys boat is a bit larger it is a yacht! I have noticed that yachts have gotten bigger over the years.

Perhaps a vessel that is too big to be carried as a tender to another vessel?

These are all good answers to this question. I asked only because I bought a 27 foot cruser and somewhere I came upon it being called a sport yacht and thought that was kinda of cool. I wouldnt have thought of it as a yacht my self just a cruser.

I like the aanswer from OOPS 42~43 feet as a good starting size for a yacht. I figured it my self to be over 30 feet at least and woundered if there was actually a set in stone rule on this.

The rule is: under a million you can not call it a yatch and can not wear whites, navy double breasted blazer, and a captains hat.

Good point but you would have to sort of differentiate a yacht from a house boat too.
I guess a live aboard ocean going vessel"?

(Of course, I once worked with a guy that had an old plywood Owens that was only about 28' or so, who lived on it year round. I'm not sure if it ran or not though, it was pretty much dock bound. I don't remember ever seeing it move under it's own power. His theory was that it was cheap, tax free living. We all figured it was just all he had left after his last divorce. What I always thought was funny was the three 120V sump pumps that were constantly running down below and his normal two cases of Gluvit that were always on hand).
