You will want to post some more information. How big is the motor, approximate weight of the boat at anchor, where are you boating (river, lake, bay, ocean, bottom composition (big rocks, little rocks, mud, sand), and what type of anchoring you are planning on doing (fishing for a couple of hours, overnight, permanent mooring). All of these factors will determine the type of anchor you will need. Post some more information and you will get some experienced advice!

It has a 140 hp omc stern. It will be mostly anchored at lake, close to shore. the lake bottom is usually muddy. Just for weekend boating maybe anchored overnight while camping on shore. I believe the boat weighs 1850 lbs.

I concur Cobra. The Navy Anchor should be a good choice for a muddy lake bottom

I use a 10# Navy anchor on my 19' Spectrum and have never had it pull loose in a lake. Good choice I would say.

I think a fluke style would be a better choice than a navy anchor. Take a look at a danforth or a fortress (even better).

Would the fluke work well in sand and mud? I have nowhere to store a large anchor.

Take a look here: iboats fluke anchors. <br /><br />Sizing an anchor depends on the manufacturer. As you look into different brands, they will suggest what size for your boat.<br /><br />Just remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to anchors.<br /><br />I routinely anchor in sand and mud in the Potomac river and the Chesapeake. The fluke style does great. I use a Fortress FX7 for my 25'.

To each his own I suppose. My Navy anchor works in muddy and rocky bottom. I never had any issues with it yet.

Navy anchors are great for rocky bottoms. But it is the fluke hands down for mud.

I always use a danforth in the sand. Never tried a Navy anchor in sand.

The lake and river bottoms I fish in are muddy and rocky...a few have sand and rocks. I've not tried a fluke or danforth to compare, but I have had no reason to either.

I use a 4LB Fortress FX-7 for my 21 foot boat and I love it. It rated for 16 to 27 foot boat. It is very light (made of Aluminum) and it digs in fast and deep. Will hold ten times the weight of a 10 pound navy anchor. Works is mud sand or hard surface. It acually has a way to change the angle of the flutes if you want to but I have never done it. I use it in lakes to anchor bow out when tied to shore, Lakes rivers and bays in sand, mud and gravel when fishing. Like any dansforth style must use proper scope or a chain.<br /><br />Coast Guard and many boating Mags have rated it best but anchor is over $100. Well worth if your wife or lady ever pulls the anchor.<br /><br />I also have a 8 Lb Danforth that I used for years before I got the Fortress. It digs in slower and will drag before digging in on hard ground. Makes it more likely to drag under a tree root or rock pile making it harder to pull. Wife and hardly pull it in.
