Anchor for LArson 274

Hey, I have a Larson 274 from 2008. As it arrived without an anchor, my dealer tried several in-stock types, but none of them seemed to be free-falling, except one. However, his type does not hold well in sand. Can you fellow-boaters just tell me what suitable anchor you are currently using on your 274 ? Thanks a lot ! Jan

hi, welcome to i boats, congrats on the new boat !

a lot of factors go into picking the right anchor, type of water, type of bottom. especally if you wanna hold a 27 footer in big water on a sandy bottom.

so we need more info to help you.

I too am in the same "boat" as you...well, not a Larson 274 but I am also looking for an anchor. I bought one called a "digger" anchor. "World's best anchor" they claim and it doesn't require a chain. After I bought the 15 lb one good to boats up to 40 foot, I then got home and researched it online. Two tests, one by Practical Sailor and the other by I believe West Marine both found it performed very poorly. In fact, those cheap Danforth type anchors called "Hooker" anchors performed much better. Needless to say, I returned it. Since I anchor mostly on a sand bottom, and weight is a big consideration, I will go with an aluminum Fortress anchor. They're more expensive, around 100 bucks for the one rated for up to a 27 footer, but they're only four pounds. (Of course you need chain with this anchor.) They also set reliably and have incredible holding power especially in sand. Also, very popular at the marinas around here.

"Those cheap Danforth type anchors": the Danforth has proved itself time and again since the Second World War, the only other better all around anchor is the kedge anchor from what I hear from my buds that are serious boaters. Understand that I have only been in two serious blows (above 60 MPH winds for over six hours). Both times my survival was "anchored" on a Danforth. Give up the idea that you can have the absolute holding power in a five ounce anchor. My cat is twenty pounds. His litter is twenty five pounds. So is the bag of food he gets. The last time my child ran to my arms and crawled to my neck he was fifty five pounds, Five gallons of gas plus the container is fourty pounds.

So what is the big deal with a thirty pound anchor?

My storm anchor is a thirty three pound anchor ( Danforth type) on my thirty footer. My lunch anchor is a fifteen pound anchor.

Now I am an washed up has been, so what is the problem with you fit types?

Holding power is far more important than pulling up less than the weight of the fish that you caught.
