Prompted by discussion of anchor rode scope in another forum.....

On my first boat I had no knowledge of such things. Don't you just "drop" the anchor and you're all set?

Found good fishing spot. Decide to "drop" the anchor. Sit back and relax, pay no attention to surroundings. Depth sounder reads 125 feet. 100' of rode on anchor. Someone on board hooks a big one, must be a cod as they don't fight much and act like dead weight.

Of course you know by now what he snagged as it floated free 100' under the boat....

Re: Anchor Idiocy

OK, Swist, since you HAD to bring up anchors, I got one...
Pretty new to boating at the time and had my li'l 14' tri-hull in the boater's cove at Alum Creek Reservoir. There's maybe 30 boats all around, some rafted together, some at anchor. We find a parking spot right in among 'em. I confidently stride up to the anchor hold, grab my brand new Dansforth with 50' of brand new rope, and toss it about 15' out from the bow. As I reach for the bitter end, it slips out of my hand and follows my anchor to the bottom! The crowd watching erupted in laughter, and I felt about 1" small. I sheepishly stepped back to the helm, started up the outboard and motored slowly away.
Re: Anchor Idiocy

fishing in erie canal (across street) with a buddy
in an old lonestar some years ago. we would troll for
smallmouth and when we hooked one we would
anchor at that spot and cast for awhile. we find
a spot and anchor, cast for awhile and land about
4 small one's and 1 good 14". after spot is fished
out, we decide to continue trolling to find another
pocket. get everything stowed, start motor and
slowly push throttle... weird, we're not moving???
old lark4 must be flooded? maybe more throttle?
little more? she finally took off after anchor
line broke

OK MY, how many cold ones does it take to break an anchor line before you figure out the boat is pulling something? :)

Re: Anchor Idiocy

Had a old couple up the street several years ago that would take their big jon boat out and fish the shallows in our area lakes. They'd get off a bank, drop anchor and let out about 50-75' of rope. They'd drift back and forth, or around in a circle figuring it gave their bait some 'action'.

The guy decided he was getting too old to pull all this rope in by hand anymore, so he got a electric trailer winch, and mounted it in his boat with a 3 way toggle switch on it.

Once he hit the 'retrieve' side of the switch, then his wife called him to the back of the boat.

Before they'd realized what happened, the anchor had stuck, and winched the boat down to it.

He said he felt sort of foolish standing there in chest deep water with all his gear floating off, and his wife yelling at him,, but they didn't get hurt.

Re: Anchor Idiocy

just got a brand new anchor put 50 foot of brand new rope on it. take my dad out fishing and find the hole were looking for. dads in the front so he is going to let the anchor down, well he is letting the line out and facing me talking to me, all of the sudden he gets this wierd look on his face. i ask him whats the matter and yep you guessed brand new anchor and rope right thru his fingers. the best part of the story is about 4 or 5 years later i am drifting over this same area just dragging a jig and a minnow along the bottom when my rod starts doing some serious bending. after i get all reeled in all i have is some nylon anchor rope. so i figure i will pull it out just to get out of the water. unbelieveable as it sounds attached to the other end was my anchor.

Re: Anchor Idiocy

Count my friend as a "me too" on this topic. He and I went to a prime night fishing hole, one evening, in his 30 footer. Since it was difficult to navigate the narrow channel and currents in the dark, we arrived just at dusk. He pays out all 300' of 1/2" line for a 30' water depth, due to the strong current. The monkey fist in the end of the line proves inadequate to jam the end of the line, and it goes through the winch and into the drink.

Now it is too late/dark to leave, so we need to stay the night. I scrounge up the anchor from my 16' runabout(which I had planned to use to stop anchor swing), and grab all the line I can find from the throwable PFD, docklines etc, and tie 'em all together. If provides about 50' total. So I toss in the 5 LB fluke-style anchor and cleat it down. Of couse late that night the wind starts howling and the boat is swinging on the hook. I am certain we will end up on the sod banks or worse, and sleep with one eye open. Somehow, we did stay afloat, and the anchor held without any dragging. I am still shocked that it worked that good. Oh yeah, way too much seaweed, too many tangles and 1/2 dozen dead eels, no fish!

Re: Anchor Idiocy

Once upon a time there was an anchor that made it's way a little too close to a launch ramp, and one day the poor little anchor was hit by a boat. The owner of the boat was very upset and tried to sue the anchor, but the anchor had no worldly possessions so all he could sue for was free anchor duty for the rest of it's life.

This thread brought back memories of a certain previous anchor thread I remember..... :D

Anyone got the link?

Man, I thought LF had a long memory. Guess it'll be a while before I live that down.

I remember that thread. It was hysterical. However, very telling. Our society has turned into a bunch of whiners.

I agree! Our society seems to have the attitude, "It's NOT my fault!" I would be furious, but like you guys said **it happens. And my fault or not, it's still my boat, my responsibility to be obsevant. He should have the same responsibility. It's about time I see a group of people who say, "Hey, I'll accept responsibility." And the linked post was hilarious, both for the advice to seek satisfaction from the anchor and for the initial whine. Thanks guys. (and gals)

Re: Anchor Idiocy

It is my best guess that is within your rights make a claim on the anchor. You could post a notice in the local newspaper informing any relitives of the anchor that they may also be liable. If the anchor is unable to pay you could indenture the anchor until the debt is paid. If the anchor is able but unwilling to pay you could threaten to maroon the anchor on dry land, this may get results as anchors love water.
Still funny! Thanks for the link Bri.

Re: Anchor Idiocy

My boat has a bow and a stern anchor on manual crank winches. Well, it had a stern anchor - after Saturday's fishing trip, it still has the winch & rope, but the anchor was gone when I got home. The rope just broke where it was knotted to the anchor. :(

Didn't use it Saturday, so I don't know where...I was hoping it dropped off in the lake rather than on the highway, but now, I have to worry about being sued over somebody's broke prop?

hope my insurance is paid up! ;)

Nah J, if it were at lake Arlington, someone would just assume it was a stump. :D

Re: Anchor Idiocy

Some of these stories sound familiar :D

I took my father out one time and when we got to the spot I told him to toss out the anchor.

That would have been fine, if I had thought to suggest that he make sure beforehand that the other end of the anchor line had been tied off to the boat. He should have known better, but I figured that I should have reminded him.

Another true story: I used to moor my boat during summers from early May until after Labor Day; I had a proper setup. 250 lb mushroom anchor, chain, rope, etc. etc. in a muddy bottom, legally registered with the state.

One weekend when I wasn't around some noob decides to set up his own bootleg mooring about 75' away for his Starcraft Islander, using a 5 gallon bucket filled with cement that he made himself for an anchor. I found out about it when my cousin happened to go by and noticed the other guys boat right up against mine, and after he called me he stayed and watched as the other guy went out in his dinghy and dragged his boat away. Whenever I moored my boat I used to fold down my Loran and VHF antennas and the tips overhung near the bow for several inches, the side of the cabin on his boat had been bouncing off against the antenna tips and eventually both antennas buckled down near the bottom from the pounding.

The guy who did it didn't even have the courtesy to leave a note or apologize for what he did. It only cost me about $100 and an hours work to replace the 2 antennas; the aluminum side of his boat was all dented up to hell like someone had spent an hour throwing golfballs up against it, so I guess I got the better end of the deal.

That was the last time I dropped my antennas when I moored the boat.

How would anyone know to whom an anchor belonged?

Unless you engraved your name on it....
