Re: anchor

Welcome to I-boats, what you ask I cannot answer without knowing the area you wish to anchor in.. if it is a stagnent pond, then use a concrete block, if it's a river, then you need something else, get a copy of practical sailor and read up on the subject..............

Re: anchor

yes along the lines of what flashback was talking about what body of water are we talking about? I went to school in the Terre Haute but haven't spent any time on Sullivan lake. I wouldn't think it would be too demanding for an anchor so extreme weight would not be an issue for hauling them from the bottom.

Re: anchor

Be very careful if you stern anchor,(usually not recomended) as this is the lowest part of the boat, & it could easily get swamped by a wave or wake. IMHO, Joe

Re: anchor

Vessel anchoring is part science, part intuition, part experience, and part voodoo. The anchor weight, design, angle of flukes, and scope of the anchor rode (determined by its weight and length relative to the water depth) all come together to make for a secure anchor. And all of that is relative to water movement (if any) and wind…which is relative to the shape and size of your vessel.

There is no one-anchor-does-it-all anchor, but the closest thing to it is the Fortress brand of Danforth type anchor with adjustable fluke angles that improves holding in sand and mud. But I think your best bet is to start with someone else’s experience and go from there. Who has a boat that is similar in size/shape as yours and boats in the area you are in? What are they using for an anchor? What anchor rode scope do they use? That’s where I would start.

Electric windlass under $1000 were evaluated in the Feb 2004 issue of PowerBoat Reports, and revisited again this month in the July 2005 issue. To properly size a windless for your boat/anchor setup, you need to know how much pull you need. For that you need to know what size anchor, what kind of anchor rode, how long/heavy, etc...

You didn’t think this was going to be easy, did you?
:)

Re: anchor

All of these posts make total sense to me. I would only add that you should do a search on this site as this has been well debated.

If I were you, I would look into the value of chain in your anchor combo. I am a big chain supporter unless you are able to run out scope in the 10/1 range and I would use it then too . . . ;)

Here is wone of those recent threads.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=011812#000015
