OK so I took my 2001 chaparral 180sse out today for the first time and knowticed that the oil guage shows zero to 3psi at idle.... And 18 above 2000 rpm... When at operating temp.. I have found that the sending units can go bad ( by brousing the site) where is mine located on my 3.0? And my boat tops out at 3900 rpm.. Is that normal? ( I k owticedthe throttle linkage has just been adjusted) I thought it was supposed to go into the mid 4000s

I found this on the Merc web site,

Maximum RPM (WOT) 4400-4800

I think owner/operator ignorance was partly to blame (that's me).... I ran it the whole time with trim in full down... ( and had about 550lbs in it total. Cargo)....

Where is the oil pressure sending unit located? And should I buy a hard copy service manual... Or is there a good emanual I could download?

Gee, you should be able to find it. It looks like a small can mounted on a plate. It has a single sender wire, and screws into the block, perhaps near the oil filter.

No Title

It's toward the back of the motor, The can looking thing aft of the fuel pump. Yours may look different but that is the location.

Even with the trim fully down it should be revving higher.
Does it run well otherwise?

Check the prop size near the base of the blades or under the prop nut.
Typical rpm and speeds with a 21" pitch would be "about" 40 at "about" 4800 rpm.
Trimming up surely will help those results.

Shouldn't he still see RPM's in the 4000 plus range regardless of prop and trim position? I would look into the throttle cable adjustment as well. I know a pal adjusted the throttle cable on one of his rides so the kids could not get WOT. Not that I agree with doing that, I don't for a few safety reasons.

Yep, looks like you have a number of things to check. First is the throttle opening all the way? Is the engine properly tuned with wires, plugs, dist cap and rotor, wires in good condition etc. Is the timing set correctly? Is your tach correct? If all these thing are good and you are sure of it then look at the prop and check pitch/diameter. Got to have the engine running properly and trimmed properly before you start messing with the prop, other wise your efforts will be going backwards.

The engine hesitates around 2k or so if you ease up on the gas and don't throttle right on up over 2500 or so (these rpm are approx I wasn't watching close enough to remember exactly) it did like an old 1100 Yamaha waveraider I have if u ease on the throttle it will try to cut and die half way through but if you go from 1200 or so quickly on up its fine. The guy I bought it from "claimed" he had it rebuilt.... Said it wouldn't stay running before he did
