Anchoring offshore - newbie question.

DH and I are new to the boating world, still working on getting the boat off and on the trailer without the drama, LOL.

Anyway, we see boats anchored offshore near small towns and beaches and were wondering how they get to shore (other than swimming) when they do that. The reasonable explanation would be small dinghies (sp) but we don't see any on the shore and some of these power boats are only about 14' so there's really nowhere to store an inflatable.

Stupid question I know, but we're curious.

You can set the anchor, "back in", raise the drive and set a beach anchor/ or tie off to a tree/rock.

they probably don't

likely just hanging out on their boat, maybe on or near a sandbar or good fishing reef ?

Well specifically, on Skaneateles Lake (NY). There's a small shopping village and fine dining. No beach or anything. People aren't sitting around in their swimsuits, the boats are empty but we dont see any inflatables on the shore. They're anchored a good 50' out and the lake is really deep right to the edge too so it's not like they're just wading in. We see the same thing all around the lake and it's just been a puzzle to us.

Sounds like the locals have set up perminent anchors (big block engine/concrete block for weight, rope and and a bouy)
They probably go out in a dingy, unhook the big boat and hook the dingy up, reverse when they are going in.

Are you seeing big orange bouys were they are anchored????

The boat's you are asking about are not at anchor, they are moored. They get a ride out to the boat, and then a ride back in. The mooring is usually a line attached to a float and secured to the bottom with weight.

This is an image of the lake you are on at the waterfront dinning/shops area. And in those red circles looks like white "Public Mooring" bouys that you can tie up to and a courtesy boat comes out to get you and takes you ashore. If it's fine dining then they would certainly come get you to bring you and your wallet into the resaraunt.. I have been a fine dinning server for many years and you can bet your butt I'd come pick you up..

Thank you for your responses. Thats' what I was wondering.... if there was a shuttle service or something. In Skaneateles, that would make sense. If you're in the village, you are going to drop some bucks.
