A couple of Friends have or have had Beamers. One got his in the early 80s, and for a Couple of Years really liked it(why I have no idea, as I thought it was a POS). Once the Warranty ran out, he started disliking the Car. A couple yrs later, his Kid managed to Roll it on a City Street(never did figure out how that happened, no reckless/careless charges were laid, Kid was fine). My friend didn't shed any tears when it was Written off.
His wife got a Mercedes, and after a few yrs, any Love/Infatuation for German Automobiles, ended, and they returned to Domestics

Yes, my previous car was a 2006 Mercedes C230 . . . terrible in the snow. I kept it for 13 years and put about 150K miles on it. I tried to get a Mercedes Wagon, but everything on the CPO market was a dark color and I wanted a light color.

So, I started looking at the BMW's . . . there only wagon was a 3-series, but this 5-series caught my eye, has folding rear seats, and the price seemed pretty good. @Scott Danforth told me that they are electrical nightmares.

I had a Saab 9000 Turbo in the mid-1990's, which was an electrical nightmare, and then some. I traded the Saab in for a 1995 Ford SHO. I previously had a Ford Thunderbird Supercoupe (great car). The SHO was a close second.

I didn't think I'd like the BMW, but I actually like it a lot. Next time around, whenever that is, I may take a look at the Lincolns . . . but they stopped making the regular cars and only make SUV's now. Since I only drive about 6K miles per year, it may be a while until it's time to get a new one.

Ted, if needed you could always strip out the 160# of electronics and wiring, do a stand-alone engine ECM

Remember when there were lots of the Jaguars that had the V-12 taken out and a 350 GM put in there ?

That would apply to just about every British Car ever made

There are soft codes that don’t set a check engine light but I guess it’s a matter of how the ECM “defines” a “problem”.
As for me I’ll take simple DC wiring and a points distributer with a Quadrajet, Edelbrock or Holley. When there’s a problem with one of those you’ll know it lol!

Stealth conversions sold everything you needed. the website is https://jagsthatrun.com/. I still buy VSS parts, etc from them. I have their swap manual for swapping TPI engines and LT1 engines in jags, Mercedes, etc.

putting ford Mustang (fox body) 5.0/5-speeds into volvos was so easy, half the parts were available from ford motorsports.

we could start Redneck iBoaters LS swap Ted's BMW

Today, I checked for a set of 'radiator shutters' . . . found them . . . right behind the kidney shaped front grill pieces. I had no idea of such a thing, but I guess cars have them now.

The error code 138701 seems to indicate that the shutter opened too soon or too much, based on the cooling conditions at the time ( ~ 48K miles). The shutters seem to work now . . . open when the engine is warm and running, closed when the engine is off.

Not sure why the code won't stay erased or even if it is a big deal. I could see it being an issue if the shutters did not open at all or only after the engine got too hot.

I will say, that finding these (not) issues is prompting me to learn more about the car.

As a sideline, I do get a kick out of folks on car repair forums who tell posters looking for insight and possible solutions for specific issues to "take their car to a qualified mechanic" . . .

Really . . . you don't say ? Such brilliance. :ROFLMAO:

I’ve been thinking of getting a newer Jeep and after looking at many I think…I’ve about had it with EPA, CANBUS, electronic everything, plastic engine parts, etc. My urge seems to be to take a trip OUT WEST…and find a resorted CJ8…..& ride off into the Sunset….with my old tech…,just how I like it….

Well to my initial point, I am gaining a new appreciation for my techy boat engines, as compared to the car techno-gadgetry

Based on what I read that car had quite a rough 2-3000 miles (46K-48K) and what is the current miles? I have more computer techology in my plug-in hybrid RAV Prime, my camry xse hybrid, the old tacoma, my BMW motorcycles :)) 2)............ it is going to be a combination of an IT person who is also good mechanic or A great mechanic with video game skills ;)

Just like the way car manufacturers tell you that you need a computer update on all similar makes and models...... a clever way to get people to the dealership so the computers can also download your driving habits........

Well I have tried to keep up with most "tech" related to my toys ...... I am at a place where I surrender on a few things and give the local mechanics some money....

Image the NEXT wave of technology and who will do the repairs...... An IT Person who is a Mechanic and now the Electrical Engineer

The car has right around 54K miles Many of the fault codes were 6-8K miles ago, but they don't seem to go away with the code clearing function.

I think the tech stuff has gotten ahead of the ability to service in some regards, and the results is the 'parts cannon'.

no sense of adventure Lou :) ,old technology takes all the fun out of being stuck on the side of the road googling "" my MY2016 + car motor stopped working suddenly ".

at least most US ,pommy and Aussie domestics vehicles up until a few years ago had OBD 2 so the roadside service guys could at least have an idea where to look ,even although 9 out of 10 times it needed a tow anyway , but you know where you stood when you got the repair bill.

OP , here is a good example of how a simple thing can send a newer car into fault code madness and stealers profiteer from it happening.

2019 Mitsubishi Pajero sport , we were cruising along the highway towing the boat when all hell broke loose on the dash board "more blinking lights than the drone spectacular on Sydney harbor when someone set of a RF jammer".
i pulled over and checked under the bonnet and to my surprise with all the whoohar on the dash board i could see no problem , IE: nothing hot , no smoke or bits of shrapnel.
figured WTF , ill just drive slow the next 20 kilometers home and sort it out there.
after lots of googling and giving myself brain damage scratching my head to no end, i decided it was off to the stealer for a ECU check before i stuff something up.
OK ,at the stealer all faults cleared + included service they scammed and one huge bill later to the tune of around $1000 we got the vehicle back.

? am i boring you guys yet :).keep reading anyway.

so we are on our way home from the stealer , we come on the on ramp at the freeway and i sink my boot into it to blend into the traffic , lights come on again ,this time the car goes to limp mode and then we are doing 15 to 20 kilometers an hour for the next 5 kilometers on the freeway , bumper to bumper traffic trying to do 110 kilometers an hour (no where to pull over).
too late to call the stealer and no road side assist.

i managed to nurse the car home in limp / go super slow mode .
get home i decided that being old school and the computer flash at the stealer didn't fix the problem i would start looking for a visible mechanical issue.

after spending a few more hours poking and prodding with a flashlight i found the problem .
you would not believe a tiny blow out hole in a intercooler pipe could cause such a array of blinking to come on a dashboard and send the thing into a dangorous weapon on a crowded freeway.

now we get back to the stealer and the $1000 bill for doing sweet FA ( not a happy camper at this point.
so , i patched the hole with a hose clamp and a bit of old motorcycle tube and drove to the stealer "" mind you its still in go slow mode and blinking madly"" .
the service manager was a real oxygen thief as well as a money thief trying to BS his way though the whole process even after i told him what the issue was and just wanted the ECU codes cleared / flashed to shut the lights off and make it run normal again , so now he is trying to charge $750 for a replacement intercooler pipe free of labor charge as a customer service for all our trouble. no talk of refund for the $1000 he scammed the day before.
pipe retails at local auto parts outlet @ $120 +gst.

90.000 kilometers later and the car has not been back to the dealer for anything and never will be .

new cars !
