After setting the timing on my 88 Bayliner 2455 (350/OMC Cobra), I was behind the boat and the engine was running on the muffs, when I noticed a steady trickle of water exiting through the drain plug hole! Now everybody knows that ain't the sign of a healthy, happy motor. After much contorting of my old body and with the help of a mirror on a stick, I finally located the problem...the power steering fluid cooler had split.

Ok, no major problem. I pulled it off and as I was removing the last water hose, when the thing practically dissolved in my hand making a MAJOR mess in the bilge. Seems like back in it's previous life the boat had been a saltwater baby and over the years corrosion had quietly doing it's thing until when a catastrophic failure occurred.

Aside from the fact that I thankful this didn't occur out on the water miles away from the dock, I now have one more project to finish before I can get the 'ol gal back on the water.

Does anybody have any suggestions on where to pick one of these things up at for a reasonable cost (the dealer wants $450 for a new one!) ? Or if it would be safe to by-pass the cooler, or replace it with a liquid cooler to air cooler?
