Decided to delve deeper in the refurb of my 1967 Starcraft. Here are some pics of the progress so far:

Looks identical to my project. Did it 3 years ago and we've had a blast with it for 3 seasons. This coming Spring though I'm going to have to do the transom.

Yeah, it looks alot like yours. In fact, I'ce got your project page from ShareAProject.com saved to my favorites. I use it kinda like a guide and also to remind me to keep at it. I just removed the starbaord side wood about ten minutes ago. I gotta say, these boats are easy and straight forward to take apart. DO you have any pics of your trailer set-up? I don't like mine at all and want to change it. It has two small sets of rollers, one on each side, and like three keel rollers which are all split. BTW, since I'm replacing the floor, what thickness plywood did you use? Also, what did you use to seal it? Did you replace the foam? Finally, do you think I should do my transom while I've got it apart?

Re: And so it begins...

My trailer set-up sounds to be exactly like yours and I hate it!! It is very difficult to get it centered when reloading. I'm going to eventually get much larger keel rollers and maybe new roller bunks. My trailer is rusty and needs a bit of work but I'm hoping to get another year out of it as is since next year's project is the transom. I used 3/4" pressure treated ply on the floor. I didn't seal it with anything because I didn't know any better (I hadn't found this site yet). I didn't have foam in my boat really. Just some pieces of construction styrofoam that the previous owner put in. I left most of those in there. I think if I were to do it again I might consider the pop-bottle method. My boat is a bit leaky and I'm afraid to put in pourable foam and have it end up getting water-logged.

As far as the transom goes.....on these boats the transom has nothing at all to do with the floor so one project really doesn't have much to do with the other. So if yours isn't rotten there's no compelling reason to do it now. Mine is completely rotten and was when I got the boat. However, the previous owner had reinforced the whole thing with a large peice of angle steel that the motor is bolted through. It is very solid. However, everything that is bolted through the rotted wood leaks like a sieve. So that's why I'm finally replacing it. I'm not looking forward to it. I'm really hoping to be able to do it without dismantling the splash well.

Here's another pic. This one taken after removing the stern-most sheet of plywood. Progress is being made! Looks like all that styrofoam is gonna have to go. I doubt that water should squish out when you push your finger into it.

You guys are awsome. I wish I had the time to do a boat like that. I also wish I could find a boat with that much room inside. Especially interested in more pictures of the ladder. Filled 1 boat with old garage sale life jackets instead of foam, cost about $8.00. Please keep the pic's coming as someday I will get the right boat to fix up the way I want it

That is probably the best way to describe it! I read in another forum that people use empty soda bottles for bouyancy when they remove foam from their boats. SOme people use expandable foam. I was wondering if mixing the two would work. You could fill the empty two liter bottles about a third, let the foam expand and harden, then simply screw the top back on. What do you think?

Re: And so it begins...

Well, here's some more pics as promised. The floor is entirely out and all of the styrofoam has been removed and all of the loose pieces vacuumed out. I've already bought two sheets of 3/4" exterior plywood for floor replacements. Unfortunately, there are three seperate floor pieces all of which require their own sheet of plywood. The one's I bought I got from Lowe's on sale for $30 a sheet, which was a savings of about $20 a sheet. I think I also found the source of my leak. In the one pic of the bilge area if you look close on the left side of the pic, you can see daylight coming through FOUR holes about the size of a Bic pen insert! Guess they'll need fixing too.
