Not really stupid, but funny....now. After spending several hours running all over the lake in my friends new speedboat, a game warden boat stopped us to check us out. He had just bought the boat at the sale on Thursday, this was Sunday. My friend has a car lot and also sells new and used boats. He had paperwork on several boats with him, just not the one we were in. This was all amusing to me until the warden ran the numbers and it came back stolen from Miami. Crap. I had only seen this one warden boat on the lake all day, within minutes there were 6 or 7 around us. They made quite a spectacle of the arrest. There was a large crowd of boats we had outran sitting and watching by now. We were pulling it with my new truck and as we backed down to pull the boat out the head warden came to my window smiling and said he just be we had paperwork on the truck to didnt we. I didnt have a tag yet because the paperwork hadnt came back. I was 10 days late for a tag. I found my paperwork and then we pulled the boat to the county jail with a police escort. It looked like we had just missed the big crackhead food fight when the put us in the holding cell. 6 hours later the had tracked the boat through the chain of posession and had a warrant for a guy in Florida. Until they got to this point, we were what they had. They finally released us and the officer that was going to ticket me for the tag had got off work so I got out of that. We got in my truck, waved bye to the boat and went home. My dad thought this was hilarious and told his friends that now his kids had been arrested like theirs had. Remember, if you get arrested in Baldwin county Ga. do it early so you wont miss the food fight.

What this reminds me of is all of the ads I have seen in Craigslist that state something to the effect of, "great boat, no paperwork, no problem getting paperwork through title clerk."

Add a "t" to the "be" and another "o" to "to" and end it with a "?" instead of a period and it begins to make sense.

i know exactly what you mean about the old "hunt and peck" method...........it will get you by--just takes a little longer.............i wish i knew how to turn off this spell check thing so i dont have red squiggly lines under every word that doesnt have an apostrophe........

was your friend compensated for the boat?.............or is it still an ongoing ordeal?

did you have to bail out?

i was in jail for a week one time and almost starved to death...........wasnt for lack of food----it was lack of food quality..........but i guess if it was a pleasant stay it wouldnt be punishment.

The auction house returned his check the next day. They handled the issue from there on out. He buys around 500 cars a year through them. I dont know if they had a legal obligation or just wanted to keep him happy. They had a warrant and a line on the thief, so after several hours back and forth with his lawyer we got to go. I never heard anymore about it.

i dont know the laws in your state.....or mine on this subject for that matter.......but im sure there is a loophole the auctioneer could have used to "exempt" himself from any obligation to the buyer.

its good to see someone following the "golden rule" these days!......ive bought a few cars at auctions, i wont mention any names, and the end results were less than desirable ..................pretty embarrassing for an auto mech :redface:....i should have done been more observant!

If your using Firefox:

Click on Tools > options > click and open the Advanced option up top > click and open the 'General' tab, and uncheck "Check my spelling as I type" > hit OK.

1. Type about:config in the address bar.

2. In the filter field type spell

3. Find the entry for layout.spellcheckDefault and double-click it.

4. Set the integer to 1 to enable the spell checker.
Set the integer to 0 to disable the spell checker.

Be warned that if you do that (which is what you asked anyway) then the spell check will not work at all. If you do what I described before then the spell check will add those words without apostrophe to the dictionary and not mark them wrong anymore. This will leave the spell check on for the other occasional words you might miss. Either method will get rid of the red lines under the words with missing apostrophe.

I won't buy a car or boat without a title, unless it's just for parts and it's clear from the condition that the thing is junk or salvage. When I see ads like that, I tell 'em if it's no problem getting the paperwork or title then you get it and if it costs you a couple bucks let me know how much and I'll throw in that much extra.

I ride dirt bikes though and lots of bikes never had titles as they weren't street legal. I'll take the VIN to the police and make sure it isn't reported stolen before buying, then make sure I get a written bill of sale while confirming picture ID and recording drivers license number. I try to cover my bases.

Back in '78 my wife's VW bug with automatic transmission was stolen from our drive way. Fast forward to the late '80s. We got a call from the local police saying they had recovered our stolen VW. What VW? Oh that VW! I told the police that we had been paid by the insurance company, so technically it belonged to them. I gave him our agents phone number. Seems as though someone had dug it out from a salvage yard, spent years and $$ restoring it, and then went to get a title.
