I recently purchased a 77-78 model 15 hp evinrude with points ignition from a guy for 40 bucks. It had a busted lower unit. I had an 83 model 9.9 that was giving me a fit. So I took the 15 hp power head and exhaust and put it in the 9.9. I then took all the electronics off of the 9.9 and put it on 15. And let me tell ya folks she purrs like a kitten. Don't even get the rope pulled once and she runnin.

It's the way to go, might as well have the more powerful version as long as you have that series engine. I am quite pleased with my 9.9 "sleeper" , which is converted to a 15hp. Basicaslly the specifications show you will get 15hp @ 6000 RPM, and full throttle rpm should be about 6500 RPM, which means you can eek out a few extra ponies depending on the load in your boat and prop.

It wasn't a 77+ with points, older than that- 76 or older. Why couldn't it be done?
